Saturday, May 24, 2014: I’m out and about today, both on work missions but also to get some angling insights -- above and beyond what I’m getting via numerous hot reports.

One up-thing I want to offer surfcasters in the apparent repeat (of last year) as real nice fluke are being caught in the surf, along with also-swam under-sizers. I talked with a fellow coming off the beach who had a beaut (20 inches) he took while bucktailing (I call it jigging) for bass. No bass, though. He was using bare white Spro with white bucktail. I actually missed out on the fine in-surf fluking last year. Not this go ‘round. And I’m betting that baited jigs will rock. Yes, you can (carefully) cast live minnows on surf-bound jigs. I know an angler who killed ‘em doing that last summer. Casts have to be gentle and short (I use side-arm) – but fluke are most often right in the wash (high tides) anyway.
Bassing has been bountiful in a controlled manner. By that I mean, there are a goodly number of bass being hooked and kept but nothing that’ll empty the reserves – the way things went during those insane snag-and-drop mug sessions in recent springs. Boats are far and away wining out over bank and surf fishing, though you can see below that some serious stripers are going for poppers, pencils and (I hate saying it) larger needles.
Blues remain unquenchably on the feed. Still, there is no action until you’re on them. Obviously, in the surf they come and go. Boats can lay on them until the cows come home. North Jetty is being heavily fished for blues. Good fun.
Join the Simply Bassin’ before heading out to surf cast this evening. Still weeks to go -- and huge fish to be entered.
I’m always looking for report and (most of all) cool fish tales. I’ll gladly exclude names if need be (initials only).
