Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report

Thursday, Schoolie alert: Look for decent surfcasting-for-schoolie potential through the weekend.

"Uh, anyone got a clue on who this guy is?"

Thursday, December 11, 2014: Schoolie alert: Look for decent surfcasting-for-schoolie potential through the weekend. Today the ocean has calmed down even further. What’s more, there is a clean-line not far off the beach, moving in.

A clean-line is a highly noticeable break between two water colors; one side is a more turbid off-color and the other side is cleaner/clearer. Most often, a clean-line marks turbid water being forced beachward (and out) by cleaner water moving in. Occasionally, it’s the other way around. Note: Clean-lines in summer also mark warmer water moving in. Not so much this time of year, when, in fact, the water might be a touch colder on the clean side.

Might there be a from-the-hatch bite on clams right about now? When we had clam wash-ups after storms I’d say yes. No longer. Since we don’t fish with crabs, bloodworms and bunker chunks would be prime baits. But nothing is better than surgical-tubed Avas/metals, plastics/jigs, medium to small plugs and unsung schoolie grabbers like Rat’L’Traps.
