Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report
Sunday, September 19, 2010:
Not much new to report. Fishing is generally fair to poor.
The surf did stay large and powerful. It wasn’t offering much of a threat to boaters going through the inlets. Seems the word of seabass had quite a few folks seeking them.
I had one small striper on vintage silver-blue Rebel. Little blues love it. The sharpies are getting quite a few bass at first-light. None over 25 inches. Poppers working (see below). I had a 18-inch-ish fluke on same plug -- hooked underneath, not in mouth.
Mullet migration has not begun – and it’s becoming a big tad worrisome. About 15 years ago, we had a fall with virtually no mullet whatsoever, just a couple small spurts. Perish the thought that this is yet another mullet-free fall. I’m hoping the hot weather over the summer has the mullet thinking they’re further south than they really are. Making me feel a tad better are the many reports of mullet galore still in the backbay. Could it possibly be the forage fish didn’t fatten up quite enough over the summer, when the hot water had them sulking in deeper water? No, the mullet are checking their weigh on tiny scales. But nature has a way of getting word to the tiny fish that they need some more meat before trying to make the long, generally eat-free trip 1,000 miles south. Yes, I’m grabbing at straws. I need mullet.
Email: “Was able to get down for pre-dawn plugging yesterday (Sat.) only hooked one (rat) - but saw mullet, spearing, and rainfish - Fished Haven beach - had fish on all 4 groins I worked - the trick is to find 'em with poppers,( had at least 7 fish completely outta the water missin the plug) then throw a swimmer - the one I caught was on a Mag Darter - all the bass were tight to the beach in the corners of the groins - you know as well as I do, warm water or not, if the baits there, so are the bass - right now it seems to be just shorts - decent bass will start keying on the mullet in the very near future( w/in 10 days according to my records)
Happy hookin' brother !! (Ed)”
(Good to hear from ya, Ed. Hope you’re right about mullet – and plugs.” J-mann)
