TUNE IN AT 2 PM EST: LIVE CONGRESSIONAL HEARING

The US is the largest commercial importer of imperiled billfish species, and the IGFA is in Washington today to urge Congress to end the importation of marlin, sailfish, and spearfish. Tune in at 2pm to watch IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser and others support the case for better protection for these important apex predators.

UPCOMING OBSERVER TRAINING COURSE

The IGFA will hold an Observer Training Course (OTC) in Dania Beach, Florida at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum on Saturday, July 21, 2012. The IGFA OTC trains captains, anglers, and mates to participate as observers in national and international billfish tournaments. This benefits both tournaments and fisheries by promoting billfish conservation through an all-release tournament format.

The half-day class will train attendees on IGFA's International Angling Rules, billfish identification, observer etiquette and boating safetly. To learn more and download an application, click here.

IGFA CALIFORNIA JUNIOR SERIES BEGINS

With summer just around the corner, Ken Jones, President of United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC) and International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Historian and Trustee Michael Farrior, announce locations and dates for their IGFA/UPSAC Young Anglers Tournament series.

IGFA is making a concentrated effort again this year to introduce "the many opportunities that sportfishing offers to California's young anglers," according to Trustee Farrior. "We welcome kids of all ages; our members and volunteers are making every effort to provide 'tons of fun' for the young anglers during each of our free events this season," he said. Read more >>

HOT CATCHES

Angler Louis W. Melton traveled a few hours north from his hometown of Clarkesville, Maryland, USA on May 18, 2012 to fish the Delaware Bay with IGFA Captain Brian Wazkavek. Melton was soaking surf clams when the 125 cm black drum (Pogonias cromis) hit and took him for a 17 minute fight. The fish was successfully boated, measured, photographed and released alive, qualifying Melton for the potential new All-Tackle Lengthrecord, which currently stands at 121 cm. See more of this month's Hot Catches >>
