Friday, December 13, 2013: Holgate entrance is open again for buggies, though I was the only truck down there for a good chunk of today. Quite a few owl-watchers hiking in – including one fellow with a huge telephoto lens. His lens could be used to check any owls who have a throat and want to have it looked at – from 50 yards away.

I saw what seem to be four overwintering owls. The overwintering look is based on a firmness in where they’re perching, moving around a bit but hanging tough in their chosen territory.  The snowy closest is around the 2,500 mark -- where the bay and ocean are joining sandy hands – as if making vows to meet on more intimate and lasting terms within the next couple big storms. For now, that open sandy plain (2,500 foot) remains home to Owl 1. That owl remains somewhat aloof but is also relatively indifferent to any humans staying on the legal side of the refuge signs. Yes, Chris, folks are being very good about keeping a legal distance.

(Below: "Screw being vigilant, I'm taking a snooze."

As for the Holgate drive-on/off area, check the following video to see the decent – albeit tenuous – ramp. See -- http://youtu.be/Ntem2D9BgI4 .

Once on the beach, the drive down is good and the end area, which had been problematic, has actually accrued a load of sand and is easily drivable.

We have some snotty precipitation descending upon us, beginning tomorrow as snow then quickly turning over to rain, as nasty onshore winds arrive. Ocean temps are in the mid to upper 40s so air temps will be getting milder as winds come straight out of the east  late tomorrow – before winging out of the west on Sunday, pushing near gale-force gusts. Sunday should be a usable day for snowy owling or beachcombing.

Here are a few snowy owl videos taken today. It’s fun keeping track of these lookers and it seems many folks are interested in the goings on of these winter visitors.
