Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report

Wednesday, November 27, 2013: Winds are very testy this a.m., much to the chagrin of boaters who enjoyed yesterday’s glassiness. The wind should be backing off by day’s end but as of midday it hold NE at up to 15 mph.
Surf fishing is slow. Big surprise. Some schoolies and a few keepers are happening but considering the heavy fishing pressure it was slow – as it is this a.m.…Continue

Tuesday, November 26, 2013: I’m giving this fall fishing an “F.” I don’t care if it the bass go bonkers from here on in – it won’t – but I flunked the Classic, flunked my website’s fund drive, flunked the mullet run, flunked the wild cranberry pick and even flunked beach buggying – having lost big-time when I hit the sinkhole and tore costly…Continue

Sunday, November 24, 2013: Ouch. My fingers are in that very state of mind coming off the beach, post-church. I got my chill on helping a couple anglers dig out of a minor bog down. I then added a couple more layers of chill. I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s called layering to meet the cold. I tallyho-ed some “gentleman angler” moments by casting plugs clad in my Sunday suit and dress shoes. Oddity of oddities, I’m pretty sure I had a swirl right next to the…Continue

Saturday, November 23, 2013: The LBI Surf Fishing Classic, after an abysmal first seven weeks, is looking a bit more like a tournament, with a decent number of fish entered over the past few days. But, please don’t take that to mean there is some scalding hot beach bite in play, as some folks have mistakenly assumed – only to rush to the beach and stand idly by. There is a decent showing if surfside bass for a goodly number of folks, while others are still firmly…Continue

Thursday Nov. 12, 13: Winds have dropped, late. Boats have gone out to check on the nearshore bite. I was watching them come back in through BH Inlet toward/at dark. Also saw an emergency vessel (flashing lights) also there, not sure why.
Below are some Classic weigh-ins, of late. I'm getting bits and pieces of some semi-decent beach action, seemingly better on the north part of the Island, i.e. oncoming folks turning left at the circle.
I remain skunked. Admittedly,…Continue

Monday, November 18, 2013: Gorgeous day – if all you want is good-looking conditions along the beach.
Here’s another read on the bite off the beach.
“John Kirby was on the Doris Mae today...8 guys limited out...nice fish....feeding on sand eels off of island beach state park....the truck guys looked like they were busy...I hope they got into some of the striped ones today.....fish were anywhere from 250 yards off of beach to 2 miles out …”

Wednesday, November 13, 2013: Genuinely cold out there. The weather finally matches the fishing, i.e. frigid. Look for serious blowout tides
I was out for much of the day throwing the closest I get to using “bait,” namely GULP!
With the ocean so calm, I use a jighead for weight and let the smelly plastic sit on the bottom a bit, adding a slow retrieve now and again -- getting the best of bait and jig-action worlds. No fish, mind you, but I’m confident that if…Continue

Sunday, November 10, 2013: I went to the Holgate wilderness fishing zone midday today and it was like a ghost town down there. OK, so maybe there’s never an overload of cowpokes thereabouts about but today I was the lone ranger. The weird part was how highly fishable the Holgate waters looked. It turned out the water was just confirming that age-old adage that looks can be…Continue

Friday, November 01, 2013: Midday. The wind is seriously honkin’ out there. And out of an oddish direction: SSW. However, there is plenty enough south in the flow to build the surf, which is averaging 5- to 7-feet -- a short-period south swell with a tough of groundswell also mixed in. That groundswell might hold the waves around longer after the winds go…Continue
