Wednesday, October 30, 2013: It continues -- the crapified fishing that is. If you’ve managed to somehow stave off the skunk, you’re among a minuscule number of succeeders – where others can’t.
I’m firstly running with my failure to launch any bass from the surf. And I really threw and threw…

How to run from a pissed off billfish ... or not:

Evening update: Tried fishing around the big jetty at Nebraska Avenue. I probably would have had roe luck fishing for stripers in the state of Nebraska --…

(Above: Nicely applied plastic tails. No humps or hunchbacks.)
Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013: Bigger plastics mean bigger bass, for me anyway. While surfside jigging yesterday, I upsized to larger, plastic, sand eel lookalikes and right at dark in Holgate I once…

Friday, October 25, 2013: I feel kinda weak this morning since I’m not armed with my usual bitch and moan abilities. I actually had a damn-good late-day striper session yesterday in Holgate, albeit all smaller fish -- though every single one was an utter Spalding football, almost absurdly plumped up. That plumpness was body fat and not just stomach…

Thursday, October 24, 2013: Man, it’s nice out there, albeit a thoroughly blow-smooth ocean – which doesn’t always bode well for plugging. Over-visibility is huge drawback when throwing artificials. We likely don’t want to know how many (thousands) of fish see our plugs and aren’t even remotely fooled. That number goes up even higher when the water is calm and clear. The trick is to look for any stir at all, especially suds and white water, even if it’s only from small waves…

Be careful out there!!!!!!
Wednesday, October 23, 2013: The drips along with a very low intensity rate among fall anglers had the angler presence sorta low today. I had to take a big chunk of time at the tire place, having the tire I lost to the sinkhole re-beaded. It came off when I went too low on the psi – in…

Sunday, October 20, 2013: I caught fish jigging today, try half a dozen fluke going for my Wildeye. As far as I’m concerned those out-of-date flattie hookups added insult to injury – the injury being my inability to catch one frickin’ bass over a three-day stretch. This despite all but throwing my shoulder out of kilter by casting jigs, metals and plugs. Need I mention we are now approaching the height of fall bassing? …

Saturday, October 19, 2013: The waters sure looked fishy today, from north to south. As for their actual fishiness, for many of us it left a lot to be desired. Of course you have the likes of Joe H. That boy can pull fish from a sewer grate. Here’s his report: Jay...just read your Friday update about late season…

Friday, October 18, 2013: Well that was a nice lookin’ day. As for it bein’ a nice hookin’ day, I guess it depended on where you were hangin’ your line.
Here’s a sorta upbeat report from Walt P: Just got in from 2 hours of fishing the north jetty on the incoming. NO BLUEFISH!!! 10 bass, 2 keepers, lots of run offs. Spot was the only thing producing. Guys throwing artificials were coming up empty.”…

Thursday, October 17, 2013: Note: The Borough Beach Haven (George Gilbert photo above) has temporarily closed the section of beach from Leeward Ave to Nelson Ave to beach buggies due to erosion. Holgate remains shut. It should open soon so we can compute the damage, so to…

DUTY CALLS: Talk about being torn. I signed up for the Classic today – literally my first chance to do so, insane schedule-wise. I wanted to air down so bad I could taste it but I had another very pressing duty calling, having been contacted to help search for the lost hunter, by covering a (large) section of Warren Grove I know very well, toward Munyon Field Road, Five Points and Sandy Road.
I feel deeply for the frantic family of the missing hunter. Those good folks are…

FRANK'S DAY: We could see something comparable to a gold rush on the surf fishing front tomorrow. It’s the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic’s single-day $1,000 special prize for the largest bass of the day.
While the prospect of having that much money riding on a single striper is sensational, it should be remembered there is…

Sunday, October 13, 2013: I’m running a quart low on inspiration. Sure, , there was that non-minor sinkhole crash but that’s done and gone (sorta) but the eroding and closing (to buggying) of beachfronts, the ongoing closure of Holgate, and, most of all, the stymied start of the Classic are all conspiring to dispirit the usual autumnal energy blast. Sure, we’ll fight…

Saturday, October 12, 2013: Real bad beach day for me yesterday. I was doing my daily (and then some) buggying beach-condition check from SB down to North Beach Haven. I decided to exit through Ship Bottom instead of using my usual easy-off in Brant Beach. Catastrophic mistake.
Unbeknownst to me there is now quicksand on some beach areas of Ship Bottom, namely off 25the street and…

Thursday, October 10, 2013: Well, it seems this nor’easter is taking on old-fashionedness. It might go a full three days. However, it is at its peak and the winds have lot of north to them. Remember, they’re called nor’easters for a reason. The contain winds of both a north and east angle.
For us, is always the east slant that does us in. That’s the onshore flow component that can maximally stacks the tides in the…
