10/31/2011 Update:
Forecast change has made things a lot fishier than earlier today. The watched low pressure is moving further out to sea. Now it seems we won’t have to deal with excessive NE winds, as formerly forecasted. Rain is almost out of the picture and NNE winds, instead of ENE, mean little if any additional beach erosion in the wake of Saturday. Good news for Holgate.
What’s more, there are again a few bluefish showing up in the system. I know this arrival of…

Monday, October 31, 2011: The storm nailed the entrance to Holgate. What else is new? It’s in a state of repair, so to speak, but not open to the passing public. Then there’s the arriving short-easter. Look for possible NE winds to 35 knots, 6 to 8 feet beachfront, much larger out at sea. It’ll be another bout of bass weather. And if you can’t get enough of storm-age, look for another system by Friday.
All in all, this is an invitation to foul-weather anglers. The last blow, the…

No, you you’re not out there fishing today. If you are I can’t acknowledge since I don’t want to encourage anyone to go out and get blown away on the beach. Of course, there are those who got hyped over the decent showing of bass during the short-lived south wind session preceding this one’easter. And it looks like it will, in fact, be another one day and done storm. In fact, the northeasterlies will go more northerly by late today, and usher in a few…

Thursday, October 27, 2011: Look for west winds to really go Honksville by tomorrow, gusts to nearly 40 knots. Then the fun begins: A nor’easter with a hook. This one in going to feel frigid and also pick up the tail end of the king tides.
Chatting with my meteoro-buddies at Mount Holly, the developing coastal low could become a bit worrisome, since it could last through a few high tides.
It’s highly unlikely this storm will be what I call a true…

South winds and the stripers responded. I’m going to prove that theory yet. Helping me was a burst of bass in Holgate. Per weigh-in info, Classic-entered stripers from 18 to 28 pounds showed at the scales. There might even be some late arrivers that aren’t entered into the daily data banks run by the Chamber.
I was also at Holgate. The water looked absolutely great for fish – and I noted that long before I got news of the fish…

BIRDS, TURBINES AND BURIAL GROUNDS: Email:
Jay, Any idea on when they might start to build the wind farm off Barnegat Light? … I agree with the need for cleaner fuel but what about bird strikes from the windmills? Trudy.”
With controversial questions like this, there’s always something inside me that goes wise-assed first – eventually followed by seriousness, time permitting.
Your bird strike question got me mockingly humming that…

Sunday, October 23, 2011:
Hope you had a decent fishing day today because you’re the exception. The reports I’ve taken in are non-reports. From a beach cruise I did this a.m. to a late-day check-around, it was, at best, a tale of sharks, skates and some badly sunburned faces. Although ocean water temps have taken a major dive, the temps about five feet under the surface are still very mild. That could keep the action slow.
Oddly, the nearshore bunker…

Saturday, October 22, 2011:
It’s that ages old conundrum: What came first, more fishermen or more weigh-ins? I say it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other. The beaches, bay, inlets and ocean were packed with anglers. It was a full-blown fall angling scene. Discard the notion that the fishers weren’t going to return, post Irene.
There was a goodly showing of stripers at the scales today. In the Classic we had half a dozen (last count) weigh-ins, including a 37.31…

Thursday, October 20, 2011: Yet another one-day nor-easter on the books. It was nothing special – and the most rain I recorded was last night: .68 inch.
While yesterday’s NE winds were also not much to speak of, today’s fairly fierce SW winds (to 35 mph) are laying some serious leafage down on yards sporting shade trees. The winds will chew up boat fishing efforts today. Surfcasting will be far more doable. Then, as I’ve been hyping, just wait until you see the elongated…

(It is that humbling time of year when I hold the hat out for my one annual donation drive. I’m heading toward my 15th year and I promise there are a load of various expenses. Every donated penny goes to covering costs. I also want to assure that I absolutely do not EXPECT donations from anyone. Some folks have annually been kind – and I want them -- and all -- to realize that I’m thankful for past help but fully understand some years are better than others.
Donations can be…

Sat. Oct. 15, 2011:
It was a total blow-out today. It didn't take much to figure that out. What was a tad more unexpected was the fairly heavy fishing pressure in the suds. The boat anglers didn't have the same show. It was a fierce go to fish even the bay waters.
I wiled away the gale-force morning at a Barnegat estate…

Now we’re even, all ye summer folks.
The Island kinda owed the tourist public a weekend after that Irene debacle. Well, this past weekend was one for the perfection books. And not many folks missed this reimbursement weekend. The beachfront was truly as busy – and, admittedly as inviting -- as any summer day. It added up to possibly the most crowded fall weekend ever seen on LBI. I kid you not.
The ocean-to-dune people coverage made it a no-go for…
