Friday Oct. 10, 08: Readying for Tomorrow --

Friday, October 10, 2008: waves: 2 feet out of the south. Water clarity: Fair to good; cleaning up after south winds mucked it up a bit yesterday. Water temps: Too warm – 65 to 68 (Yep, I took a 68-degree reading near Little Egg Inlet).

We’re into a stretch of pure Indian Summer. For the next 5 or 6 days we’ll be well into the 70s for daytime highs. The winds will generally be out of the north and west but will become land and sea breezes by as early as Sunday.

Needless to… Continue

Thursday Oct. 9, 08: Albies make for some fun

Thursday, October 09, 2008: Waves: Choppy 1- to 2-foot south winds swell. Water clarity: Good to too-clear.

I’m so loaded down with drab reports (hey, they’re as important as the sizzlers) that I’ll quickly jump into some actual hooking.

CATCHINESS: Hey, wanna have some line-burning fun? Here’s one of the first hot reports I’ve had in many days:

Jay, here you go:

”Broke the inlet to working birds...over snapper blues! After two quick 10 inchers, I hauled right out to… Continue

Wed. Oct 8, 08 -- A change in the wind might help

Wednesday, October 08, 2008: Waves: 2 feet out of the south. Water clarity: Way too clear; aquarium-like.

I was at it before light today – and should have stayed in bed. No fish. No bait. Not even a bluefish. No lack of trying. Plugs included swimmers, poppers, divers. I saw fish. Near Nebraska a huge splash not far from the jetty seemed to be the result of a large bass chasing a wounded bunker. The bunker may have been chased in from outside. No more than 100 yards off the jetty was… Continue

Tuesday Oct. 7 08 -- Still not so hot out there; some stripers -- Fote clears up fluke in tourney controversy

Tuesday, October 07, 2008: Waves: 2 feet, north. Water clarity: Excellent. Water temps: Holding upper 60s.

Headline: Still not so hot out there; some stripers -- Fote clears up fluke in tourney controversy

Bass are poking their heads up here and there, chasing bunker and spearing near the beach and after bunker balls off Little Egg Inlet. I heard of a few caught along the beachfront, including some just-keepers. I personally plugged a bunch of jetties from mid-Island south… Continue

Sunday Oct. 5, 08 -- Chowderfest eats up anglers

Sunday, October 05, 2008: Waves: 2-3 feet, south; building from north late-day. Water clarity: Too clear in some areas. Tides: Low tides have left very little water to work along the beachfront.

There was noticeable fallout from today’s Chowderfest as more than a few surfcasters and such were committed to attending the cup-tipping event – having to forsake lengthy angling sessions. There were still a goodly number of folks out trying and report from the North End boat anglers seem to… Continue

w/ add-on ... Friday Oct. 3, 08: Finally a tide with some drop to it

Friday, October 03, 2008: Late-day report

It’s uncanny, as in frickin’ weird. No sooner do I mention in the a.m. report fort today that the cocktail blues remain AWOL that I go to Holgate and leading bluefish hunter Stu D. tells me he’s been blasting 2- to 3-pound bluefish all day --- the first time since Holgate reopened. The blues were going for mullet. Also, Tom W. stopped by and threw out one of his plugs and had a nice blue on within a couple casts. What’s more, I got reports of… Continue

Thursday, October 02, 2008:

That change has hit the airways. It’s windy, chilly and fall-y out there. This just feels like fishing weather. And stripers are starting to think the same. A very modest (better than nothing) bite is showing along all of LBI beachfront with Barnegat Inlet area (including the sedges, bayside IBSP) are offering fish, mainly schoolie-types but some to 32 inches. I have secondary word of a couple serious bass caught from boat. One was pushing 30 pounds (North… Continue
