Tuesday, September 30, 2008: Waves: 3-4 feet but dropping. Water clarity: Very good.
We are into a fine stretch of what might be called autumnally accurate – if you get tired of saying “It feels like fall.” Starting midweek, cool northerly jet stream air will angle in and air temps, especially nighttime, will drop into the 40s. Importantly, winds will turn westerly and hopefully break the back of that fishing-unfriendly northeast beast we had in-house for over two… Continue

Sunday, September 28, 2008:
Hurricane Kyle is right off the coast this a.m. but far enough out to offer no impact short of a moderate groundswell – that is actually smaller than the waves from the cold-core low pressure system that hit a couple days ago.
As mush as I hype Holgate, I have to admit the fishing there has sucked almost beyond belief, especially when compared to Barnegat Inlet (see segment below). I’m not simply talking guys getting skunked but the seeming lack… Continue

Saturday, September 27, 2008: Part 2 –
Outside of fog, conditions were better than expected out there. First day of Decoy Show went off fine. Some boat anglers tried bayside LBI but ran into low-viz headaches. Small blues, a few weaks and fluke after fluke were being reported over the radio. Some bass are coming to the beach near South Jetty and near North End jetties, mainly on bait and very scattered. Bassing overall remains sub-par. Kingfish are out there and targetable by fishing… Continue

Saturday, September 27, 2008: HOLGATE WAS REOPENED AT 9:30 this a.m.
The closure seemed warranted in respect to the potential for a two-storm hit – and erosion was serious down near the Osprey Nest. Yesterday’s wait and see continuation of the closure had many buggyists angst-y since the weather actually became decent and the winds fell back to near goneness.
I want all Holgate-ites to fully realize that the call for closure is described under the Forsythe Refuge rules and… Continue

Friday, September 26, 2008: Waves: Nasty large. Water clarity: good. Water temps 67 to 70.
Holgate is closed until further notice. Beach overwash there was moderate at high tide with un-passable zones for a very long stretch south of osprey nest. Major showing of exposed roots and even ancient sod banks. A new major “break” point is showing in the area south of Osprey Nest. Holgate days remain numbered as it erodes away to nothingness. I know that’s bleak but you should see some of… Continue

Wednesday, September 24, 2008: Waves: Strong 6- to 8-foot short-period northerly wind swell. Water clarity: Fair but getting roiled rapidly. Winds: From now through Friday gusts will exceed 40 mph in squalls.
Not good. That’s pretty much it, be it fishing, surfing, beach hiking, i.e. daily LBI life in general.
This blow is going to be significant; maybe not one for the record books but enough to possibly impact the early portion of the fall surfcasting season. I say that… Continue

Tuesday, September 23, 2008: Waves: Powerful 5- to 7-foot short-period northerly wind swell. Water clarity: Good. Winds: Bad; 15 to 20 mph and gusting.
This week is offering a repeat performance nobody wants to see. Get out and boo the skies. Almost a spittin’ image of last week’s nor-east gust-fest, this week could see even worse winds, especially if a tropical system now in the Caribbean takes a NNW course and arrive toward the weekend. Even if it takes the more likely straight… Continue

Saturday/Sunday Sept. 20/21 2008:
The wind refused to bow out gracefully on Saturday. Despite gusts to over 20 mph – and cold cloudy skies -- there were a goodly number of folks trying to angle. Success came in the form of some fine stripers taken in the suds by surfcasters, mainly mid-Island. Going for needlefish and poppers (finally), the bass were mainly early a.m. – when the wind had settled, momentarily. These were obviously bass on the sly for stirred mullet pods. The surf-stir… Continue

Saturday, September 20, 2008: Winds: Calm (6 a.m.). Water clarity: Fair to good; still a lot of stir from wave action. Waves: Slowly dropping 5-6 foot (larger sets) north swell. Loads of N to S current.
The winds played a total spoiler yesterday but have dropped off the map overnight. They will reappear today but not to the degree (direction) of yesterday, which saw sustained 25 mph NE right through to sunset – it was also seriously chilly (due mainly to the fact we’re so acclimated… Continue

Here's a pro report that slipped through the cracks. Sorry, Cap.
9/13/08 - 9/14/08: OK, I didn't report in a while as there wasn't much to report. Until Now! I was out with Brian Little, Daniel Little, Michael Little, Walter Webster, Nathan Blevins, and Bobby Blevins all from Oxford, PA. We first tried a spot out in the Glory Hole for some bluefin that were caught by a few boats we knew. We just missed the bite, but did manage two false albacore tuna. But we were rewarded with… Continue

Above: Here is the email with above pic. “Although I'm a Holgate guy the Bluefishing at IBSP has been wicked the past week. Slammers to 13lbs spitting up sand eels and mullet. Maybe this Fall will be for real. This is us yesterday afternoon.” This gives a great shot of what sand eels look like. Many folks still not familiar with this one-time “everywhere” baitfish that has actually declined drastically in numbers over the past 25 years. It is… Continue

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 -- Waves: Small. Water clarity: Excellent. Winds: North, light.
It was bass blast just like in the past. Thick schools of mullet near the Rip in Holgate were getting worked by bass. Anglers were nabbing some live mullet and letting them drop. Hookups were fairly fast and furious. The action as made that much more intense by the long bout of no bass we’ve had since last spring. Unfortunately, the bout of better bassing wasn’t real long-lived. Still, it may… Continue

ABOVE PHOTO (PER BL Bait and Tackle website, angler Bob Misak) “My son and I fished with Jay Close on Saturday, and we had at least thirty blackfish, with three hefty keepers for the table. We had just gotten started when Bob Jr. blasted a 13 lb. 5 oz. sheepshead. He took the net and left to ice up the monster when I got one on. Jay Close jumped down on a low rock and jammed his finger in my fishes’ mouth and tossed him up on the jetty.… Continue

Saturday, September 13, 2008: Waves: Small. Water temps: 70-ish. Water clarity: Rapidly improving.
There’s some change in the wind – make that the water. The mullet have shown and the spearing are hugely in-place. I bring up the spearing because as I was departing Holgate this afternoon (after throwing nets for hours) a nice quiet bluefish blitz was showing midway point. What’s a quiet blitz? Very few birds and the main tell-tale sign being plots of nervous water, where the spearing… Continue

KURT H. AND A SAND BAR SHARK, HOLGATE. Thursday, September 11, 2008: Waves: Finally settling down; 2-3 feet at the largest. Water clarity: Improved a lot; good to very good – and getting cleaner with NE winds persisting. Water temps: Ocean – low 70s. Bay – mid to upper 70s but dropping rapidly over next couple days. Well, we have a very fallish weekend coming up: cool and crisp at night and moderate day temps. Winds should be relatively cooperative.… Continue

It’s All in the Release
HEAVY-HANDED BASSING: It’s time to oil our lines and change our reels. No, wait. Reverse that.
Bass season is inching toward us – at a snail’s pace, if the current lack of major bass is any indication.
My prepping for the soon-to-be bassing has included mulling over the most recent updates on the state of a stripers, i.e. how well the biomass is faring.
According to the latest Addendum I to Amendment 6 to the to the Atlantic Striped… Continue

Saturday, September 06, 2008: Waves: 3-5 feet and building throughout the day. Water clarity: Good but will get churned. Water temps: mid-70s.
It was hurry up and wait, as highly pooped Hanna took her time getting here. Waiting for tropical storms is like waiting for water to boil. I found it interesting how many folks were out and about (at storms and what-not) after sitting at home sky watching and seeing next to nothing, storm-wise. In fact, as I was among those tiring of waiting… Continue

Thursday, September 04, 2008: Waves: Dropping 2- to 3- foot long period southerly swell. Water clarity: very good. Water temps: Mid-70s. Final days of fluking have been uneventful; lowered fishing pressure. Inlet areas had some triers. Reports I got included smaller than usual undersized fluke. Also, had a couple “very slow” reports by folks trying for multiple species. Down at the Holgate Rip there were a few small fluke to be had but it was fairly slow overall. No blues and even fewer bass.… Continue

Wednesday, September 03, 2008: Waves: Slight drop to 3-4 feet but much choppier. Winds: (Strangely) Gusting out of the east to 16 mph; sustained are lower and it seems to be dropping. Water temps: Mid-70s.
The big chatter is not fishing but Hanna.
As an amateur meteorologist I have been heavily mulling over the computer projections. I like to do it without checking the Hurricane Center at first, just to see how close I come to its official forecast. Interestingly, as early… Continue
