Buncha news stuff below:
Saturday, August 31, 2013: Wind surely played the spoiler today. The southerlies just won’t quit and the water along the beach is becoming turbid, light brown. The bay is a better bet providing you work lee sides of sedges and such. Barnegat Inlet is doable. Despite the gustiness, party islanders are making their ways to anchor points off IBSP and Ship Bottom.… |

Friday, August 30, 2013: There wasn’t much of a wind breather between yesterday’s gusty north-easterlies and today’s brisk southerlies, though a few waveriders and some early a.m. casters grabbed the glassiness right at sunrise. Water temps remain id-70 after down-welling in yesterday’s…

HOLGATE BUGGYING UPDATE:
Mancini change of heart?
It seems the Holgate far south end MIGHT be opened to buggyists sooner than I bemoaned. The glorious…

August 27, 2013 Blog:
Ship Bottom borough beaches will be opening to buggies on schedule, namely, the third weekend in September. Obviously, this is pending any beach drama created by storms between now and then.
Knock on driftwood but, to this season-ending point, we’ve been kinda quiet on the tropical front. However, as we move…

>Sunday, August 25, 2013: Very nice weather and decent angling conditions, though fluke drifts are hard to come by, early day, with do-nothing winds. The overall fishing pressure this weekend has really fallen off. I’m guessing it might be fall cleaning -- and readying the pack for a return to school. Many a churchgoing angler I talked to wants to fish fall but must sneak time in among home repairs left over from Sandy -- including, for some, big moves, like…

As of now, Holgate will apparently not be reopened until Oct. 1. This is not based on the Refuge but on Long Beach Township officials, led by Mayor Joe Mancini. Apparently public usage in the Holgate area is too high to allow buggying there during September. Joe knows best, right?
The Forsythe Refuge, on the other hand, will…

August 18, 13 ....
Weather has taken a spill after a run of near idealness for almost an entire week. The drips and northeast winds shouldn't linger long. It'll go around to the northwest quickly, likely inviting in some hot-ish air for much of the week. This week should be decent to good for fishing, boat and beach. Fluking remains good on the catching front and exceptional on the doormat side of things. By the by, I'm gracious with using the "doormat" term. I believe…

Friday, August 16, 2013:
(MINOR BEACH BUGGY UPDATE: I have never ever gotten so many calls, emails and Facebooks asking about the status of the front beaches for buggies. Please believe me when I say – on the behalves of Island municipalities – that there are tricky last-minute beach tweaks needed to give the final OK – and offer the permits.
I will go out on a limb by highly unofficially saying that it seems towns are amenable to…

The Fish Story

(Frontal system from earlier this year. Weird, indeed. Oh, it also spawned a tsunami.)
As early as March of this year, I had anticipated in this very blog, that we could very well see tornados this summer. That applies even if this latest blow wasn’t a bona fide twister.…

Monday, August 12, 2013: Man it quiets down fast when weekends end. We’ve gone back to the olden days when summer weeks were based on dayhoppers and weekend end warriors. (Below: Returning home on Rte 9 -- a while back.)
Spot are so thick in the bay near HC that it's five at a time of using a sibiki. First timer trying…

Saturday, August 10, 2013: Light west winds right on schedule. Despite only off-and-on low sun, this a.m. is just fine for angling bay, beach and sea. Get it in this morning because those brisk southerlies are coming.
UPDATE: 3 p.m. Ocean has cleaned amazingly well. The water is 71 degrees and very clean. Light west wind works miracles.
With all the sun cancer fear, many folks misread days like this, thinking few damaging rays are making it…

Friday, August 09, 2013: Weather was a spoiler today but might back off for tomorrow. The winds honking out of the south added more chill and coffee coloring to the ocean. Surfcasting was no bargain – and it was the only deal in town, as winds and storms had boat fishing on a short leash.
Again, the winds will switch to the west for part of tomorrow and might offer a fishing window of opportunity first thing…

Hubbub Over Shark Handling;
Sand Tigers Make Lousy Moms
Boy, was that some seriously superb weather. For those who might be reading this in the distant future, I’m hoping that crystal clear, mild summer days are still around in your globally-warmed world.
I could do without those touches of fall in our early-August night air. Such coolness sparks that odd primordial stir inside of us, as if we have to already start gathering…
ContinueMan, it was gorgeous out there, though it's bothersomely weird already feeling a touch of fall in the air. Today's lack of congestive summertime ozone, which can give Ocean County air that yellowish haze, makes life so much clearer and comelier. This is one pretty-ass island when it shines like this.
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))…
