Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report
Thursday, January 30, 2014: Holgate’ Rip gets no freakier. It’s a sight unseen for many moons – as in decade moons. The break-up of the bay ice is showing like it does up in the Tundra. The break-up might be a sign the ultra-bitterness is over? Hey, the bay might have an instinct when it comes to end times for polar vortexes.
The west side of Holgate is downright freaky. Check it out: …Continue

JAN. 22, 2014:
It's obvious we’re into some protracted frigidity. Even more, we’re into some honking offshore winds – into the foreseeable future. The blowout tides are going to become insane. The lows could be as low as we’ve seen in recent years – and we’ve seen some…Continue

1/20/14: The middle of winter finds me hideously busy, but c'est la vie, which is French for “whatever, dude.”
A new volley from the polar vortex is about to strike, though it won't be quite as frigid as the last and won't last as long. Still, I'm getting too old for this s***. On…Continue

Monday, January 13, 2014: lookin’ good today but weather rollercoaster to continue tomorrow, rain-wise.
Temps will stay balmy compared to last week and should barely reach freezing at night for next 10 days. Again, wait until you see the warm batches arriving later in winter.
It remains a good time to…

Jan. 7, 2014: Baby it's cold outside. Tell us something we don't know. Well, did you know that the word “facetiously” contains all 5 vowels and “y” in alphabetical order?
For a high we barely reached not-so-sweet 16. What's that mean to global warming? Read the first…Continue

Monday, January 06, 2014:
The arriving bitterness could be far more damaging than the similar one we had last week. While the arriving cold snap will be kicking around the same single-digit real-time readings – with wind chills used in the quick-freeze…Continue

SNOWY, ICE AND 4WDs: Here’s where I offer my proverbial 4WD snow warnings.
Firstly and foremostly, 4WD (truck or SUV) is not all that miraculous on snow and ice. Oh, it’s way better than your standard rear-wheel 2WD vehicle, though 4WD can’t hold a candle to front-wheel drive vehicles on icy and shallow-snow road surfaces.
There’s this all-too-obvious delusion among mainly uninitiated 4WD’ers that their vehicle is geared for anything winter can throw upon roadways. Ain’t true.…Continue

Thursday, January 02, 2014: My long-term winter forecast was “If you don’t like the weather wait a day.” I emphasized wild swings in things. I know it’s too early to assess my assessment but tomorrow night we will see insane single-digit actual air temps, then, by Sunday we will see temps back into the 50s. If that isn’t a wild swing just wait until later in the winter -- based on jet streams being like a yo-yo, dropping arctic-polar air…Continue
