Wednesday January 28, 08 -- Icing the lakes; verts with a jail term

Icing the Pines; Beach Vertebra Law

They refer to the core of summer as the dog days yet that name seems a ton more apropos to this frozen time of year, when one can easily envision an overfed hound plopped within spark distance of a fireplace, responding to the after-dark question, “Wanna go for a walk” with a barley raised eyebrow and an all but audible, “I’ll tell ya what, wake me when you get back and let me know how it was.”

While we’re not crushing any long-standing… Continue

Tuesday Jan. 20, 08 -- Ice is so-so; weekly stuff

Icy Cove, Worm Farming and Toothy Art

ICE NOTE: Collins Cove was ice-fished over the weekend. There were perch at a steady pick, per the only reports I got (second hand).

Per usual, the Cove’s shoreline, where the sodbanks and the river ice meet, rose and fell wildly based on tides. At high tide, you can often step evenly from the bank onto the ice. At low tide, there can be truly treacherous 3-foot drop-off between the bank and the ice. To bridge this problem area, a communal… Continue

Thursday January 15, 09 -- So cold it might become fishable

Thursday, January 15, 2009:

A dusting snow squall is the vanguard of the arriving killer cold. By tonight we’ll all know why we annually swear we’re going to become Costa Rica snowbirds -- as soon as finances allow.

For me, I’m mentally eying artwork projects I’ve been repeatedly putting on hold, as I fished, tracked, treasure hunted, i.e. did things common to temperatures above 10 degrees (tonight’s forecasted low).

Looking at the long-term forecast, there is about a 30… Continue

Sunday Janaury 11, 08 -- The frigidty is coming

No way I'd get very pissed if this was my girlfriend. Sunday, January 11, 2009: We sidestepped another snow bullet but there is absolutely no running from the tidal wave of frigidity that’ll hit late this coming week. Personally, I don’t care if I ever ice fish again. However, there are long-term lookers who think the upcoming freeze might go yard on places like Collins Cove. Bite your frost-bitten tongues. Hell, the days are getting longer. Can… Continue

Tuesday jan. 6, 08 -- Fishing Takes an Alka-Seltzer

Fishing Takes an Alka-Seltzer

I’m back a-desk at The SandPaper, preparing for my 20th year here.

As managing editor, I get loads of stuff crossing my desk. Some of it I take to heart, the rest I swat at with a rolled up newspaper.

I bring this up since, in penning this column, I often (more often than not) take leisurely diversions to the farthest parameters of the fishing realm, i.e. subjects that need an electron microscope to detect any relationship at all to… Continue

Friday January 2, 08 -- New Year is worth meeting over

Friday, January 02, 2009:

I’m back from a hiatus. Very few reports of fishing success, though I saw folks driving around with rods and such. Also, I have a couple emails from anglers hoping to catch their first fish of 2009. Some bitingly cold weather has held down serious angling outings.

This coming Thursday there is a meeting of the state’s Marine Fisheries Council. As usual it takes place at the Galloway Twp. Branch of the Atlantic Co. Library, 306 East Jimmie Leeds… Continue
