Sunday, October 28, 2018: Well, the sea is trying its darnedest to lay down after it was rudely riled by the 24-hour storm slap. As expected, the beaches took an erosive hit, but most didn’t lose ground in a long-term sense. Lots of dried up foam from bubbled algae. That’s the dark strip of muck near the dune fencing. Don’t panic, it’s organic.'

Now up to four entries in the LBI Surf Fishing Classic. That leaves almost all the prizes wide open for the taking.

This coming week will greet a slew of schoolie stripers. I base that on sound … conjecture. There’s also a goodly does of law-of-averages mixed in. For added mixturing, the water temps have dropped even lower (mid to low 60s) and not far to our north, some fairly steady beachfront stripers in showing fish in the 30s … or inches.

It can’t be overlooked that Shell’s Striped Bass derby had a couple major bass total weights weighed in, though outside of those there was squatola taken.

Here’s a update from Dave Bentley:

22nd Annual Seas Shell Striped Bass Derby.

Results are in FinChaser II 1st. at 43.9lbs

XYZ 2nd at 39.7 lbs.

No other fish over 28" made it to the scale.... So get this!!

TJ assumed the helm of the XYZ with his dad's passing this year. I told my partner I had a feeling this was TJ's year! Seeing that TJ now had the responsibility to do it all...get crew, plan runs, make tackle decision, plan where to go. the whole shebang... when where and how was 100 % on him. Walter use to do it all!!!

Well XYZ didn't leave BL inlet till 8 something this morning. They evidently went up to the wheel, put the lines in and started to fish. TJ must have planned this out beforehand. He had his dad's ashes on board and he was determined to commit his ashes to the deep during the Shell Derby. As soon as he did...they hooked up on the wire spoon. (Walter hated 'stupid' fishing LOL) Their fish should have won it, though they were very happy with second.

The 22nd annual Sea Shell Derby was committed to the memory of Walter Johnson III. What a way to turn it over to TJ walter!!

Last July we lost an incredible fisherman in Walter Johnson III and this weekend his family did him proud. Congratulations to the XYZ. When Walt passed away there were many tributes included those from his son TJ and his nephew Jay. This weekend was the Sea Shells 22nd annual Striper Tournament in which they paid tribute to Walt. Statement below was written by Jay Buddy.

Awesome time at the 22nd Sea Shell Derby. We faced our challenges, but we stuck it out like Walt would have and it paid off with a 39.75lbs fish for 2nd place. Amazing job to our captain @lbiproblems who took for for his Dad on the XYZ. You would made Walt proud today! It crazy that after TJ spread his ashes on the port side we had a fish two minutes later on that rod, thank for the help Walt it was the stuff of Legends. Thank you to Sea Shell Resort & Beach Club and the Hughes family. This is by far the best run tournament, it brings the community together, helps many though the charitable giving and it’s fun for everyone. @ Sea Shell Resort & Beach Club

I also want to post this Hughes (Sea Shell Club) family announcement prior to the event. It shows the incites the family had into both the weather and the event.

Dear Fishermen and Supporters of the 2018 Striped Bass Fishing Derby,

Many of you have expressed concerns about this weekend’s forecast. We would like all of you to be aware that we are as concerned as you are and watching the weather carefully. We understand that there is going to be some severe wind and weather for Friday and part of Saturday. The decision to fish, not to fish, or enter the tournament rests solely with the captain. We are not encouraging anyone to enter into a dangerous situation. Our interpretation of the weather forecast indicates that it should be fishable sometime Saturday afternoon and we are encouraging our anglers to please fish with caution and only when you consider the conditions to be safe enough for you, your crew and your vessel to be out. Some of you have asked if we will be rescheduling the Derby. Unfortunately, there is no option for the Sea Shell to delay this event. We are closing for the year on Sunday and have a construction project starting Monday. If you feel entering the derby is not in your best interest, we encourage you to still come and have fun and purchase a party package! This is a charitable event and come rain or shine, wind or snow we choose to come together as a community and raise money and a few drinks too! Thank you to all who continue to support this event and we look forward to a great weekend.

The Hughes Family
