Saturday, July 07, 2012: Once again, the boat fishing pressure is insane. And the fluking is somehow keeping up with it. Numerous reports of very satisfied customers getting a decent keeper rate from locales far and wide – bay, inlet and nearshore. I had an interesting email sent via wi-fi connection from some guys who went out after sharks and ended up seeking better fluke in deeper water. They didn’t catch a load but every fish was 5 pounds or over. Also “When we unhooked the fish they were so cold it felt like they had been in an ice box.” I’ve actually felt that phenomenon a few times myself. It attests to what some better flatties consider the perfect water temps to laze away the summer season. I’ll bet my infrared thermometer would have given the exact skin temp of those fish – and offer a significant scientific insight into just how cold the water was deep down. http://www.instrumart.com has real good prices on infrared thermometers.

Seven year old Jack caught his first fluke today when he was out with his dad at Little Egg Reef. His 2-8 fluke was caught on squid and fresh spearing.

Happy day: See Jingles B&T website for more:

I have blisters on the bottoms of my feet. Harvey Cedars sands burned me up as I exited from a super-session of beach volleyball today.

That nasty-ass sand that attacked me had to be the new pumped in tourist sand, since that beach and I have a long standing romance, dating back to decades of riding some of the best waves on the Eastern Seaboard thereabouts. I also caught my first true cow bass (37 pounds and change) there -- on the same beach where I now play v-ball every weekend.
I got that eye-opening bass using some “latest and greatest” plug, sold to me by the late “Big Jim.” The blackish swimming plug nailed that bountiful bass on only my third or forth cast with it. As I released the fish, after measuring, I figured striper life was finally mine for the casting, thanks to that killer plug. Do you know that lure never caught a frickin’ thing more, I kid you not. And I wore my arm out trying. I retired it under the premise it had caught me my best bass -- when in reality I hung it on the wall because the stupid thing was defective or some damn thing.

ODD TEMP SWINGS: I have to note the insane air temperature difference between the beach and the bay – at least for part of the day. Between 11 am and maybe 1:00 pm, a delicious sea breeze was wafting along the beachfront, holding temps down to the low 80s. However, on the bay just across the way, the southwest winds were exhaling air temps well into the 90s. Then, in a matter of a couple minutes, the west wind managed to muscle its way oceanward and we beachfront people were blown a kiss from the furnace. It went from 83 to 95 (and rising). I bolted – to the above-mentioned foot-scalding exit.

The ocean water aped the air, in its own way. Early in the day, south winds had upwelled water temps down to the low 63, maybe a tad cooler on some beaches. It made for a wicked thermal swap for folks trying to cool off. Then, just as the west winds led in the torridity, the cold brownish water in the swash was blown away and milder cleaner 70-ish degree water took over.

Those sweet and savage top-gun insect-eaters have blown in on west winds. Squadron atop squadron of dragonflies are in the Island hood -- and nary a biting insect that isn’t freaked out of its wing scales.
Each and every dragonfly can eat hundreds of flies and mosquitoes in a single bound – as many as a thousand per day. Times that by the thousands now blown our way and the sky stalkers are doing their very best to take a small bite out of today’s outdoors discomfort dynamic.

It’s hotter than a witch’s tit out there.
Wait a minute, that makes no sense at all. Unless, of course, that’s referencing those witches on “Charmed.” Yeah, that’s it. So, it is hotter than a witch’s tit out there.
