Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report

Saturday, November 07, 2009: Waves: Small south swell.

It sure wasn’t yesterday out there. The ocean looked similar on the surface but the bunker were not showing just below. In fact, they were no-shows in many areas. With the weekend angler masses out there, a fair number of bass came to the scales but they were that entry-level zone, with a couple nicer ones mixed in. See lbift.com. Bluefish remain sketchy – and seriously smaller than usual for this time of year.

The winds have not built the way they were forecasted. In fact, it looks like we might get some very desirable (in fall) south winds. That could turn things on, mainly on the chunk baiting front. Needless to say, there are still some large stripers around. Even the slightest stir of the suds will get them cruising the surfline.

I don’t think I mentioned but yesterday I was throwing a huge designer swimming plug. Its incredible swimming action seemed easily capable of fooling the bass chasing wounded bunker toward the beach. Well, it fooled one fish. As those around me bested bass to near 40 pounds, don’t I go and land a 16-inch-ish fluke that had come off the bottom and blasted my mega-plug that, had it been a real fish, it couldn’t have swallowed without choking to death. Bizarre. A couple folks saw it.

I haven’t made as much of it as I should, but a goodly number of Classic bass have been kept alive and released after being weighed in.

BLOG: I’m fully behind the catch-and-release thinking but not to the point that I evenly remotely support being down on the anglers who weigh fish in during this tourney. As I’ve oft said, the great majority of anglers in this event have released huge numbers of fish. They’ve literally earned some take-home bass. Fortunately, we only have a couple (if only one) militant keep-no-bass angler in the hood.
By the by, I’m all ears when it comes to a true slot bass -- a size-zone that gets fully protected. It seems the 32- to 38-inch realm is a super slot to shelter, since these are fish seemingly sure to offer a genetic excellence to the biomass, while of an adequate size to assure a dominance during spawns.
