Dante hoists a catch-and-released bass (look carefully and you can see the bunker ball outside). The fish was 45-inches and likely 35-pounds-plus-plus. Not that much later, same spot, Chris nabs, hoists and relases a fine striper pushing 25. Both were snag-and-drop caught. The scene.

FISH ALERT: Seemingly on schedule, the front beach and out maybe a mile is lighting up. Birdplay, blues and bass are showing north to south with some prime areas being mid-island and south toward Holgate – but far from excluding anywhere, as blues in the 10-pound range and bass to 20 are banging big balls of drifting jumbo bunker, sometimes only 50 feet from the beach. Snag-and-drop is working well, per Don of S.C., as is Wildeye-ing and other various techniques, per a call-in. Chunk bait on dead sticks is more for the non-blitzing periods, when stragglers abound. There is yet to be a massive breakout of blitzing blues and such but the excitement level – and potential level -- for mobile anglers and runners is through the ceiling. Runners: working folks who get word and drop their carpentry, dry-walling, landscaping, even office jobs and grab the rods they have secreted near-at-hand this time of year.
