Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

December 1, 2013: Such a day, as Chrissie Hynde might say. (Pretenders, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U74kDn1fq5w) It was not only gorgeous but super fishable, even in the face of very low tides and an ongoing swell. The water is clean and still holding near 50. As for the fish, they didn’t enter into it, literally. But, hey, the bass bite in the surf might start any second now, as has been said since for months on end.

Month change: Welcome to the start of December and the end of the 2013 Long Beach Island Surf fishing Classic. If you didn’t weigh-in even one fish, don’t feel like the odd angler out. It was as odd a tourney as has ever been seen.  I have resorted to blaming Sandy or global warming or too many blazing sunsets. That last one was my utterly last-gasp guess at why we had the worst fall bass fishing in over 50 years.

Sure there is that decentish run of boat stripers we’ve been seeing of late, but that microburst of bass doesn’t come close to curing whatever the hell has ailed the stripering since September.

As to the possibility of there being a long-term fish problem out there, perish the thought --and just watch bassing and bluefishing detonate next fall.

Back to the Classic, congrats to the winners. They doubly earned their stripes after factoring in the solid slowness of all hooking. By next Classic, the turn-over of the leadership should be finalized, leaving the contest in the hands of shops, clubs and dedicated individuals.

Got this slow boat report from Walt P: Got out this AM. Tried a drift with a spot on the outgoing along the north jetty with no results. Headed up north of the old CG station to a fleet of about 20 boats sitting just outside the breakers. Dropped my spot and was hooking up the second line when the clicker sounded. Picked up the rod to lock the reel and the fish was gone. Nothing for an hour and then another run off with no hook set. Saw one 18” bass boated so I’m thing these pint sized bass tried but could not get the spot into the mouth. Tried some black fishing at the north jetty with no results. It was a beautiful morning on the water, but I think the fat lady has sung her finale. WP.

Last day of bass fishing for me in NJ yielded the biggest of the year! Great morning with Jeffrey Holloway. On the little blue. In two weeks I follow these guys in VA!
