Saturday, September 27, 2008: HOLGATE WAS REOPENED AT 9:30 this a.m.
The closure seemed warranted in respect to the potential for a two-storm hit – and erosion was serious down near the Osprey Nest. Yesterday’s wait and see continuation of the closure had many buggyists angst-y since the weather actually became decent and the winds fell back to near goneness.
I want all Holgate-ites to fully realize that the call for closure is described under the Forsythe Refuge rules and is in conjunction with the Long Beach Township read on the situation. Stu D., a volunteer with Forsythe DOES NOT make the call for closure at all. In fact, Stu was as concerned as the rest of us about getting a rapid reopening.
The Tuckerton Decoy Show is in full gear -- and is rapidly being populated by folks put off by the showers this morning. There are amazing duck there this year. Look but realize the fatness of wallet needed for many of them. Note: I feel it’s always best to pick up decoys with two hand – one beneath the tail and the other under the chest. I know those heads were meant to stay put after placement but having one come apart – of worse, break off -- in your hand while lifting a six-figure decoy is a tad tense.
More report later today.
