Buggying report:

The beaches, including Holgate, remain snow covered. Drive the wet sand areas. Going through the snow not only leads to bog downs -- as ice gives way -- but there's no telling what types of foreign object are hidden from sight under the snow. Take it from one who knows. You hit a piece of boat wreck with spikes in it and you not only destroy the tire but sometimes even the wheel.

Holgate ramp unadvised passage effort ...

Ice out is happening quickly. For the few folks who still faithfully fish for winter flounder, the instant the ice goes the largest blackbacks are on the move. A decent interception point is off Harvey Cedars. ONly way to find them is with chum galore. I'm told small circle hooks work great with the light bite of these flatties. Circles also allow for safe release for small models.

For shellfish aficionados, the blue mussels that have been washing ashore on LBI recently are as large as you’ll ever see them. They aren’t in rafts, just small bunches, but you don’t need that many to make a delicious meal. These are obviously in a cold-water mode, which truly seems to add to their delectability. A quick sand purge is helpful but much of the grit in many mussels is from pearls. I kid you not. Tiny white oddly shaped pearls. Again, the current mussels are very clean. I prefer them in marina sauce, though a butter and Chesapeake Bay seasoning works great.

Motorist alert: When leaving LBI, the weather has pretty much removed the lane lines on the outgoing Causeway. Be very alert to traffic in either lane drifting into your lane -- either left or right lanes. There is absolutely no room for drifting error with the lanes now so narrow -- and a defiant concrete divider flush against the left side of outside lane. Taking it slow is best.

Here's a look at the ice out in BH Inlet. It was noisy with all the ice colliding ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlMdxMZBcA8&feature=youtu.be

Something to hold us over for now. We are nearing another season, and are looking forward to every aspect being bigger and better than ever.
