Saturday, December 29, 2012: Junk weather and junk computer times for me. I’m huddling inside the LBI library trying to tap into their Wi-Fi. My office and home internet capacities are in the crapper. If it ain’t one thing it’s a dozen or so.

I had some distant notions of…

(Above: Midday today. A perfect example of that I-95 rain/snow line.)

Wednesday, December 26, 2012: Now what?

I get a spurt of time off and the skies decide to become seriously unsavory.

I had mentioned last week that this week would be all over the weather board, and, sure enough,…

Sunday, December 23, 2012: Trying my hardest to get into both the Christmas and vacation spirit. Maybe not trying hard enough. It just doesn't feel all that holidayish out there just yet, even though the calendar guarantees the date is correct.…

Friday, December 21, 2012: That was some blow last night. In fact, it blew a big headache my way (see below).

The winds have swung around to the west, wickedly. The bayside floodwaters will be blown out to sea in…

Official tuna record

The IGFA has officially approved the record application for the 193.68 kg (427 lb) yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught by Guy Yocom on September 28, 2012 while fishing aboard his boat, El Suertudo (“The Lucky One”). The boat was captained by Greg DiStefano, who put Yocom on the fish approximately 100 miles off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Yocom and another angler were chunking to a school of…

Wednesday, December 19, 2012: Feels like a slight touch of fall in the air. Face it, our winter weather – which began, meteorologically, on Dec. 1 -- is getting weird again, vis-à-vis last winter.

Hope you didn’t take any bets on it being a white Christmas. Maybe up New England way.

We’re in a…

Dec. 16, 2012 -- Nice bass of the day; Getting ghosted in Stafford

Chris Lagrossa of Toms River just took the lead in our Sandy Extension Tournament with an 18-lb 9-oz bass. 2nd place is currently held by Rob Vallone with his 12-lb 6-oz bass. There's a little more than a week left and plenty of fish in our waters.

12/12/12 -- assorted stories

Went Fishing, Caught 4 Deer. The Best Day Of Fishing Ever! Some fishing stories are a little hard to believe, but this guy has pictures to prove his story...I've heard of salmon jumping into boats, but never anything quite like this... Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat. "Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us. We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed. I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boat. In all my years fishing, I've never seen anything quite like it! Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering." "This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of my boat, the Alaska Quest. We headed for Taku Harbour . Once we reached the dock, the first buck that we had been pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say 'thank you' and disappeared into the forest. After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help. This is me carrying the little guy. My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet. We didn't know how long they had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive. My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget, and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!" "Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear." - Mark Twain
