Sunday August 9, 09 :: Cocktails and sharks

Sunday, August 09, 2009: Waves: 1- to 2-foot north swell; light currents. Water temps: Mid-70s, inching toward upper 70s. An unexpected rain event washed out the early a.m. hours to about noon. There were some fluke seekers putting on rain gear but, face it, fluking is simply not one of those targetings that inspire you to fish against the skies, especially with a report I got of an angler over west Barnegat Bay going 1 for 28 while fluking yesterday.… Continue

Friday Aug 7, 09 -- Great conditions before horrfic heat next week

Friday, August 07, 2009: Waves: Small east swell.

Super fine conditions this weekend, favoring offshore trips and ocean fluke drifts. There are blotches of bigger fluke in deeper water, even to 70 feet. There is also some fluke potential closer in. Try the Lumps (HC) but don’t tell anyone I sent you. Also, work those halo zones near reefs. Inlets still have very good potential. Try working west of inlets at top of tide, as cooler cleaner water moving in has had better fluke tagging… Continue

Thurs. Aug 6, 09 -- Inlet fluke and a few croaks.

Thursday, August 06, 2009: Waves: Small north swell forming. Water temps: North wind will blow in exceptionally warm water, mid-70s plus.

Fluking is inlet-ish. Best reports of keeperage coming from waters bayside of inlets and within inlets themselves. The ocean fluking is highly unpredictable. Odds don’t favor anglers but those parking on a hot zone have things their ways -- for spurts.

The season’s first croakers have been hooked near Little Egg Inlet, the usual arrival… Continue

Wed. Aug. 5, 09 -- fluking gets kinder

Wednesday, August 05, 2009: Waves: 2 foot south swell. Water temp: Mid-70s off beach but some upwelling along beach.

Winds are picking up out of the south. There is still some inside fluking to be had. The bite has, somewhat oddly, picked up on the keeper front. I’ll bet I’ve gotten half a dozen reports from folks surprised to actually have a few really nice fish in the cooler. I also get that same “fat” word. Two folks spoke of empty stomachs when cleaning their fish. This is not… Continue

Aug. 5, 09 -- Weekly blog-along

Stuff of All Sorts;

WMIT Wows ‘Em

While I enjoy writing all over the subject-matter block much of the time, this is one of those fishing-loaded fishing columns.

STUFF AND MORE STUFF: On August 20, there will be a NMFS meeting down in the Villas, Cape May. Some library thereabouts. Comments are being taken on making the shortfin mako fishery essentially catch-and-release only, for both recreational and commercial sectors.

This is profoundly unfair and unacceptable… Continue

Sunday Aug. 2, 09 -- WMIT's wild finish

Wow. Just plain wow.

And that’s a lot coming from someone like me who generally throws words around by the truckload.

The final day of WMIT2009, was something out of the annals of the “World’s Finest Forth Days.” At least I think there are annals to that effect.

Firstly, the flotilla I had announced wouldn’t be heading out for Day Four, headed out like gangbusters. Over 40 boats took advantage of the additional day – and damn decent weather.

Back at… Continue

Sat. Aug. 1, 09 -- WHIT madness

I'm covering the WMIT -- so I'll slip those reports in here. I hope to get a regular blog in here at some point. Weather hadn't allowed for much nearshore action.

THESE ARE BHM&TC WHITE MARLIN INVIATIONAL REPORTS:

Saturday, August 01, 2009:

Sorry this ran late. I suffered an utterly aggravating loss of notepad. But my frustration/anger/dpression can’t compare to that of the Day Two contestants, who departed the docks under calm and inviting wee hour conditions and… Continue
