May 31, 09 -- Decent weather, decent fishing -- North still dominates

Sunday, May 31, 2009: waves: down to 2 feet. Water clarity: improved to good. Winds light a.m. could pick up.

It was heavily congested with anglers off Ortley, per some friends who boated up there – to get frustrated by some unfriendly encounters with crowds (with attitudes.) The bite wasn’t torrid, per their call to me, but all three onboard had their bass bag, culling out some larger fish for 28-inchers. Interestingly, thy had their best luck (fastest hits) bouncing larger jigs with… Continue

May 30 -- Decent weather -- iffy fishing

Saturday, May 30, 2009: Waves: 2 feet; medium-period easterly groundswell. Water clarity: Fair but should be cleaning up as the day goes on. Winds: Brisk offshore this a.m. but still easily delt with by even smaller craft – heading out for ocean fluking. Currents: generally light, non-directional due to direct east swell.

The wind has swung west and the swell has smoothed out. By all appearances it’s going to be decent for fishing, weatherwise. There should be enough stir in the… Continue

May 28/29 -- Joe H's Thursday night report

Jay,

Fished the north end surf tonight in perfect striper conditions. Of course I forgot my newly sharpened surf gaff at home as I was targeting big fish with big baits tonight. It must of been an omen. On my very first cast, right before dark, a huge bass attacked my 16" live eel right at my rod tip. I knew I was going to hook a good one tonight with no gaff around. It didn't matter though. The fish pulled off after a short powerful run. It looked over 30lbs. I don't think I let him have… Continue

May 28 -- Tropical action close by

Thursday, May 28, 2009:

If it seemed the ocean was gaining in nastiness as the day went on, that was compliments of the first tropical activity of the year. A fairly well-defined system formed off North Carolina today and quickly decided to head out and away from the coast. However, the intensifying system threw some drizzle and general drippiness our way. Fortunately, the most worrisome winds were way out at sea. It was mainly the surf that showed the stir, reaching about 5 feet along the… Continue

May 26, 09 -- Weekly Blog

BLOODWORM EXTENSIONS: Email question: “I’m a weekend surf warrior. I get down Fridays, load up on bait and don’t come up for air until it’s time to drive home at sunrise Monday morning. Fishing LBI is truly what keeps me sane and I maintain that sanity with your daily reports (http://jaymanntoday.ning.com). My question has to do with the bait I buy each week. Any leftover bunker and clams I either freeze or throw out but I’m never sure what to do with those super expensive bloodworms. Is there… Continue

Tuesday May 26 -- What a windy difference a day makes -- drat!

Tuesday, May 26, 2009: Waves: rapidly building 3-5 short-period northerly wind swell.

We’re still in the fast-change season. That’s obvious this a.m. as chilly very brisk (low fishability) ENE winds have replaced yesterday’s light and variable (highly fishable) breezes. It is going to be a tough go out there and a real bummer for those boat folks smashing stripers from Seaside down to the Bathing Beach, IBSP. I know a lot of yesterday bass bangers were up at sunrise today and cursing… Continue

Monday May 25, 09 -- Bass alert!!!!!!!!!!!

1 p.m. addendum.

Water warm-up alert: A light northeast wind has allowed a lens of much warmer water to push in along the beachfront of LBI.

From north to south, downwelled water has ushered in surfside water in the low to mid 60s. The weekend’s 50-degree water has essentially been overridden by the warmer arriving water. During overrides like this, the colder water is suppressed toward the bottom.

(Downwelling is the opposite of upwelling, the later allowing the deeper cold… Continue

Sunday May 24 -- Fluking a holiday for a select few ...

Sunday, May 24, 2009:

Well, the weather was not overly cooperative for the weekend and the bass were equally no-showish. There were some tkane, for sure, but the percentage of fish when couple with the massive number of anglers out there was not great. I’ll have weekend weigh-ins in here tomorrow. I took a couple days off but have to work tomorrow -- when most of you are taking in the last day of Memorial Day weekend/Monday.

Fluking looked large – but slow. Shops from BL… Continue

May 23, 09: Chilly wind shouldn't hurt fluking -- much.

Saturday, May 23, 2009: Waves: 2 to 2 ½ feet. Water temps: Low 50s. Light south to north current. Winds: South: Brisk as day goes on.

The winds have played a bit of a spoiler. Southerlies have knocked water temps along the beach way down, not only biting into the bass bite but also adding a noticeable chill to the air this a.m. – as I walked on to plug a bit and was hit with pure feel of winter. Yesterday the bass were fairly cooperative, per a number of keepers taken. Again, today’s… Continue

Thursday, May 21, 2009:

It has begun. Bassing 2009 has flared from 40 to 60 feet of water off IBSP southward to the surfline of South End LBI.

The boat fishermen are still mainly a-troll, using stretches and umbrellas (with plastic shad bodies.) Bunker spoons are also attracting to the hilt. Going south off Barnegat Inelt the bass are in much closer, maybe 25 feet of water. The troll works there also.

Note: Some very harried bunker pods are forming off Barnegat Inlet. Boats… Continue

Wednesday, May 20, 2009:

Some warmer water moved in with yesterday’s east winds and the stripers followed it. Along with three entries into the simply Bassin’ tourney by midday (see www.fishlbi.com) , I had five reports of briskish bassing. Here’s a recent email. “J, Finally shirked all of my responsibilities long enough to fish today and contribute a report. This morning I caught one 26” fish in BH on a pink fin-s in my kayak as high tide ebbed, and then switched to the surf where I… Continue

Tender Talkin’ Tuna; Shotgun Start for Fluke

This is the official start of the start weekend. The official start-start is actually the July 4th weekend. However, for those of us of an Island Ilk, the re-cycling of the traffic signals and the droop-age in Boulevard speed limits is already cause for summer shock. I’m always looking for cool fishing tales. You can drop me an email or go to http://jaymanntoday.ning.com to leave on at my website.

May 18 -- Bassing makes a shift

Monday, May 18, 2009:

Simply Bassin’ 2009 update: A new website has been created for the Leaderboard. It is still being developed (and yes that’s a long shot as a striper image) but will allow an easy read on what’s up with this event as it heats up. Go to www.fishlbi.com.

It’s cold to the south and hot to the north, then cold further north. That translates into crappy bassing on the South End (after some blazing bass times) and a surge of better bass to the North End,… Continue

Sunday, May 17, 2009: Fog, mist and a myriad of other weather conditions have made angling highly hit-or-miss. That hit-or-miss-ness has intended to the times when you can actually get lines in water. Some folks are finding all-time bassing along the beach, per a few reports I got at church today, including a rave revue by piano man Paul P. who had his arguably his best week ever, working the suds of Harvey Cedars. However, even he saw the ebb and flow of scalding hot hooking one day and down… Continue

I have some insider info regarding the prestigious Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic for 2009.

As I had previously noted in my writings, there was a pressing need to greatly reduce the impact the Classic had on the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce office. The daily data collecting during the weeks of the event – not to mention the registration of upwards of 1,000 entrants – had outlived the tolerances of the always-busy folks at the Chamber. By the by, the workload also… Continue

Thursday, May 14, 2009: There are more and more reports of the big girls showing up. Mainly caught on boats, bass to over 40 pounds are being confirmed via photos and a few weigh-ins.

There will be an updated Simply Bassin’ board tomorrow. A couple entrants were lost due a snafu in faxings. Still over 6 weeks to go so sign up – the spring stripering wildness should begin soon.

The bass action on the beaches is bouncing all around. The flare-ups are offering bassing as… Continue

Wednesday, May 13, 2009:

I only infrequently touch on local politics herein but I can’t pass by the truly stunning statement made by the voters of Stafford Township last night: “We’ve had it with build-out, environmental degradation, the capitulating to private interests wanting to run roughshod over a township that used to be a very nice, downright quaint, bayside community.”

In case you hadn’t heard, Mayor Block and nearly the entire township council were crushed in last… Continue

May 13, 09 -- Weekly Workout

WEATHER FROM VARIOUS ANGLES: The weather this past weekend was way warmer, way nicer, than initially forecasted. Instead of taking the incredible weather and running with it, I ran into those folks who went after the fact the Weather Service was so wrong. That gave me pause, as I pondered the possibility of someday perfecting weather forecasting. Imagine: On January 1 of each year, we get the exact unwavering weather coming up every day of the arriving year.

I’ll warn you right now that… Continue
