Saturday, May 19 -- Blues back again -- with emphasis

Saturday, May 19, 2007

The bluefishing has fully exploded again. The channels, be they in the inlets or bayside (Grassy and such), are holding cocktails (2- to 4-pounders) to exhaustion. Some fishing folks are literally tiring out. Boat fishing is far better than surfside or bank fishing, though the suds are still seeing passage after passage of bluefish. I’m not sure why the bluefishing had disappeared for awhile but the massive biomass is an eye-opener.

Bassing in the surf is a bit… Continue

J-mann Blog Friday May 18, 2007 -- Windblown -- but bass anxiously waiting

Friday, May 18, 2007:

Weather things are actually a tad worse than the forecasters had pegged. The winds are a solid 25 out of the NE and the rains were pretty steady last night, though they’ve been reduced to spits by midday. I’m wondering if the cleanup of the surf will happen by…

J-MANN : Bigger Bass and Fluke Bellies Allowed

Monday, May 14, 2007:

Bigger bass are showing. Here’s an interesting email: “Jay, I was fishing late afternoon Sunday with all the guys on my street. We had been getting shorts and as it usually goes one of the guys caught a 31"er. Great. Then he hooks and loses another big one in the wash after getting caught up in another’s line. Then he caught a 33"er then a 35'er and finally a…

J-mann -- Breezes, bass and The Dike

Saturday/Sunday -- May 12, 13

Breezes played the spoiler for some boat fishermen today (Sunday).

I have reports of nonstop hooking on the beach toward the south. Clams attracted bass after bass, all small but as plentiful as it gets on a couple beaches. Big bass also as hard to come by as it gets. Still, a few keepers came to light.

Emails and reports:

“Another weekend of decent striper fishing despite the high winds. Clams are the ticket although most of the fish…

J-mann blog :: Friday, May 11, 2007: Blues to clams, bass to pass --

Friday, May 11, 2007: Very nice day though the south winds added a bit of a nip for surfcasters using clams to catch, well, bluefish. Yep, the bluefish are so ravenous they’re gulping down clams – not really their fair foodstuff. A phone report from Mid-Island told of huge slammers taking those clams. Far more common, are the reports of small blues going for Sassies and such. Doc T. was into those – and having fun. Hey, when you can say “It’s all…

J-mann May 9 -- Winds backing down and my find of the day

Wednesday, May 09, 2007:

Lots of coastal fog today, making boat fishing very tricky, especially close to LBI. The winds backed down and it seems there should be some decent breaks in the gusts, possibly right through the weekend. Look for south winds until the weekend then light north.

Rogue weakies…

J-Mann: Tuesday, May 08, 2007 Touchy Tog Issue

Tuesday, May 08, 2007: Busy day in the SandPaper neighborhood, as the season of plenty moves in. I have gotten a couple reports of fair bassing but there is still a slowdown, as much from the winds (fading today) as the bluefish bombardment.

Another weekly column section.

TOG BLOG: Over the weekend, fishing buddy Walt P. went out in search of his favorite quarry, tog. He worked the rocks of Barnegat Inlet by anchoring up and chumming. Nada.

I had previously mentioned in…

Monday May 7, 07 -- Bass slowdown to beat the band -- Plus blueness

Monday, May 07, 2007: Waves: large, windblown

How about that storm off North Carolina? Waves over 25 feet already – and an expected deepening of the stationary low, which will tuck itself just below the Cape Hatteras jut of land. We may see large ground swells waves from that southerly low but our weather should be fine – though winds today are actually brisker (NE) than forecast, also thanks to that low.

And did you see the devastation from those Midwest tornadoes?…

Sunday, May 06, 2007: Wind -- but "wild" just waiting to happen

Sunday, May 06, 2007:

You weren’t out there today. It was nasty this a.m. and even though the shower and clouds moved out midday, the north winds were in a piss-poor mood for some reason.

From that dreary intro and into yesterday, when things were gorgeous, though building south winds…

Friday, May 04, 2007: Nearly a bass alert --

While this is not a full-blown bass alert, it’s close to it. I have three different reports from three different surf front zones where bassing is virtually nonstop hooking. The latest report had to do with mid- Island (southish) where a two angler team pretty much lost count of the take, the catching starting minutes after hitting the beach and going straight through to clams-out time (translation: no more bait). The best of that day was a…

May 02, 07 -- Weakies getting stronger -- more fuze blogging

Wednesday, May 02, 2007:

Nights are looking bright thanks to the moon and NJDOT.

Weakfish tales are picking up the pace. While far from peak conditions, the number of ten-pounder-plus sparklers is up and the range is inlet (Beach Haven) to inlet (BL) and famed bayside holes in between.

A few weakie seekers are…

Tuesday, May 01, 2007: What a chunk of wood!

Tuesday, May 01, 2007:

Real nice day – despite my being stuck behind a desk slaving away to get you your bleedin’ SandPaper out there. Just kidding. It’s my pleasure to put out the Island’s favorite reading material.

Quite a few surfcasters and boat anglers out there, per my quick looks at the beachfront and listening in to radio chatter. I don’t want to jinx it but it sure looks like it’s building toward a really fine bass spring – and also a fine bluefish spring, if you like…

Sunday, April 29, 2007: -- Clammy bass and shrimpy blues

The wind got way testy today, especially late day when the gusts turned on accompanied by some odd showers with isolated bolts of lightning, mainly mainland.

I was deep woodsing it in search of vernal ponds to record for state studies. It would be sunny one minute, rainy the next, sunny the next. Kinda weird.

Bird life is in full swing. I’m pretty good ID’ing the likes…

Saturday, April 28, 2007: Thin Lizzie and the blues -- back in town

Let’s see, I think it was Irish band Thin Lizzie, something like 1976, hit the top of the charts with “The Blues Are Back in Town,” a worldwide smash.

Ok, so maybe I’m not totally versed in pop rock, being a life-long heavy metal aficionado, going back to the Black Sabbath and the rowdier Jimi riffs.

Be it “boys” or “blues,” I know the “back in town” part is correct since a fully reliable source had 4-pound blues today, while fishing in a weakfish hole that hadn’t even been…

April 27, 07 A tad testy out there -- but the weekend should be way fishable

Friday, April 27, 2007:

Obviously quit spitty out there. However, here on LBI we haven’t had nearly the downpourage of folks just to the north where rain is coming down in five-gallon buckets-worth. It has actually bee fishable out there and a few folks have been on the surfside of things. Not much to show, though bass are being caught. The surf stripers are common enough that it’s…

Daily Update and Info to Ponder

Thursday, April 26, 2007:

Not a perfect day, sky-wise, but it wasn’t bad for fishing. I’ve gotten word of stripers in the surf – and not there, also. Per usual, it’s right place/right time and in come as many as half a dozen bass – to keeper size, every six fish or so. Clams working on bass at many locales. The oddest clam success was some night…
