July 10 -- Weekly Column (Danger -- There might be nonfishing stuff within!)

Seeing Stripers In Situ and Goin’ Buggy

SCOPING LAIDBACK STRIPERS: In response to my recent columns on spearfishing, I had a majorly interesting chat with a highly experienced diver (non fisherman) who has been scuba diving and snorkeling our jetties for years. I won’t say…

Monday July 9, 2007 -- Waters looking better -- baitballs to the north

Monday, July 09, 2007: Waves: Small. Winds: Light. Water clarity: Excellent.

A fleet of Barnegat Inlet-based anglers rushed north to cash in on the baitball action (see below). I wish I could say the LBI-based…

Sunday July 8, 07 -- Slow to clear

Sunday, July 08, 2007: Waves: Persistent 2-4 foot windswell. Water clarity: very slow clean-up; south to north along the beach.

The beachfront did not snap too with cleaner and clear waters, after the hard south winds churned things to hell and back a couple days back. The cleaner water hung maybe 50 yards off the beach in many areas but left the close-in castable waters dingy and…

July 07, 07 : Great dayin the morning -- now where's the fishing to match?

So that's what a 10-pound fluke looks like. Thanks, Blake. Caught recently in west Barnegat Bay.

Saturday, July 07, 2007: Waves: Slight 2-3 foot south swell. Water clarity: Poor but improving.

Kick-ass day out there. One of the nicest this summer. Fishing however is pushing so-so and struggling to manage that.…

Thursday, July 05, 07 -- Wind a ruiner -- but due to lay down

Thursday, July 05, 2007:

Winds have blown away the fishing potential. Southerly gusts to 30 mph have churned the surf (and dirtied it up) along with dropping ocean temps into the 50s. Some bayside flukers have used sedges as wind blocks but that leaves only the flatties in short drift zones, often small fish.

Winds will gradually go westerly…

Fluking on the 4th

We went fluking in the ICW from Holgate to BH on the 4th of July. Winds were cranking first out of the SW then to the SE. The ride there was OK till BHYC when we had 3 - 4 swells right on top of one another (Not Fun). We started our drift in holgate. On the first drift I nailed a 13' flattie that went back....I thought it was going to be a good trip, However the fluke stopped biting or we could of been drifting a little fast even with the parachute out.... The drifts were near perfect. Only…

July 5 (After short July 4 break) Two weekly blogs to check out

PYKRETE IS TOTALLY COOL: It’s been pretty well established that this column likes to roam freely in fringe fishing realms – as in, stuff that has virtually nothing to do…

Monday July 2, 07 -- Reporters take over

Monday, July 02, 2007: Waves: Small.

Thanks to the following reporters for filling in my blog today -- as I write heavily at work.

Jay,

Have a few fun stories for you about this weekend. Saturday we headed out with the family for a boat trip off BH. Decided to stalk bunker schools instead of fluke fishing. I snagged a pair of bunker and…

Sunday July 1, 2007 -- Winds of bass change?

Sunday, July 01, 2007: Waves: Building to 2-4 feet but afternoon with a strong north to south current.

(Money for winners of Simply Bassin’ 2007 is in the shops. Go to the shop were you weighed in the bass. It was the largest turnout yet for the event, with a touch over 180 anglers, meaning the prize money was close to the 200-entrant schedule. Thanks to all those who joined…

Saturday June 30, 2007 -- Happy Holidays -- or is that next weekend?

Saturday, June 30, 2007:

Just a quick early-day note to say brown sharks are in and large. Mainly water of the South End. Sharkers have landed big fish with the famed and seemingly inevitable unstoppable run-offs thrown in. There’s always the chance of a huge bull being in the mix – and among the unstoppables when maxing out in size. With rays now showing – in small…

Thursday JUne 28, 07 -- South winds stir things a bit ...

Thursday, June 28, 2007:

Overly clear water getting stirred a bit, as upwelling knocks down the water temps. Westerlies tonight and tomorrow will smooth things out and likely bring back that dramatically clear aqua.

Some folks are tapping bayside South End after dark and jigging up very large fluke, to over 5 pounds. Can’t give more details than that…

Wednesday June 26, 2007 -- Slowing to a halt

Wednesday, June 27, 2007:

Some fair fluking early today (Double Creek had a few of those keeper fluke spurts) then the wind played ruiner.

After a period of fine fishing I have to admit things are not so hot. In fact, they’re downright crappy for a few of my regular reports. Here’s a bit of encapsulation of that slowness:

“jay, i just couldn’t bring…

Monday June 25 -- a little Help from the reporters

Monday, June 25, 2007: Loads of info rushing in so I’ll let it do the talking for me as I prepare for the largest SandPaper issue of the year. For my weekly column I have a un tail of a lost rod, a desperately diving spouse and a jetty that kept a marriage off the rocks.

Hello All,…

Brown sharks have arrived!!!!

Anchored up in great bay Saturday night in search of the brown shark with a buddy of mine. Arrived right at dark, chum overboard, within 5 minutes zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!! Gotta love it. Fish was big 15 minute fight 30lb test with 140lb wire leader and 9/0 hook, Whole fresh bunker as bait. Fish went back and forth under boat and snagged on my floating chum pot. Snapped of course!! My guess is fish was 6 foot long. I was pissed we didn't land that fish!! We had plenty of other…

Saturday June 23 -- I can see clearly now -- and that ain't so good

Saturday, June 23, 2007: It gets no clearer – or dingier.

The nearshore water, right up to where the last of the suds dissolves into the wet sand, was so clear that the chances of catching a fish were clearly impossible. OK, so maybe a small fluke was taken near jetties but only predawn offered a serious shot at a striper. In Harvey Cedars, I was watching a fellow casting out…

Friday June 22 -- Winds are brisk but bassing ain't

Friday, June 22, 2007: Winds whipped in from the west and made for a beautiful looking day but a challenge on the angling side of things.

There were some fair showings of small bass in the suds but we’re back to a struggle for a keeper. I guess we’re getting into our resident bass set-up, though as long as we have bait pods out there, the bigger bass should be with us – even throughout the…

Thursday June 21 -- A bit slow but bass potential building

Thursday, June 21, 2007: Waves: Small

Decent fishing conditions for the first day of summer. Fluking is astoundingly cellular. The areas where the better flatties are celled up makes for fine catching. Double Creek remains in the doormat zone once fish are found. When off-cell, there is super slowness. While shorts are common they’re nowhere near as packed in the way they were a…
