Mon. Nov. 30, 09 -- Big bass bite

Monday, November 30, 2009:

Well, the big story of the weekend was the remarkable bass bite mainly south end, though a couple nice bass came from north end beaches. It became one of the busiest weigh-in days of the entire Classic. By the by, the tourney would have been over already had it been 6 weeks.

Here is a fun report from a non-tourney angler who pushed the 40-pound mark while donuting in Holgate, as everyone… Continue

Alert -- Sunday, November 29, 2009: There is an excellent snag-and-drop bite in the south end zone. It was hot early a.m. but backed off a bit midday. Still, the stripering is shining. The boat action is also turning on big time. If you don’t have to zip back home (mainland) today, it’ll really be worth hanging in through late-day and into tomorrow. Continue

Saturday Nov. 28, 09 --

The winds were moderately crazy out of the west but it made little difference to a large holiday weekend angling crowd. A combination of clean ocean conditions and super sunny weather lead to a damn decent showing of stripers and blues into the Classic. A couple of the bass were over 20 pounds. There were also a goodly number of non-tourney stripers, per a fellow I met in Wawa who had two keeper to take home (Burlington County). “I got them within 20 minutes… Continue

Nov. 27, 09 -- West winds arrive with vengence

(Above) Kirby's catch Holgate:

Friday, November 27, 2009:

Well, the cold-season west winds have arrived and will exert themselves to the tune of near gales. It’ll feel chilly due mainly to our lack of acclimatizing. Still, we won’t be getting any where near freezing on the Island. With the holiday weekend aligning with the blow, there will be more than a few wind-burned faces by tomorrow evening. I’m looking for… Continue

Nov. 25 weekly blogabout

BASS AT SCRAP VALUE: To say that boat bassing has been good is like saying gold is simply shiny – and not up to $1100 an ounce.

The tales I’ve gotten about stripering near the inlets have been up there in the ionosphere, which I’m pretty sure is really high.

The problem is how do you really describe a phenomenal bite when all the words like unbelievable, incredible, insane, astonishing, mind-boggling, amazing and righteous have all been used to death and back? I guess I should offer… Continue

Mon. Nov. 23, 09: Wind again -- and again.

Monday, November 23, 2009:

The catching is slow on the beach and boat. Wonder why? Check out the anemometer – that’s the goofy thing that tells wind speeds. Gusts to 25 and gusting. We’re back into the total-honk mode – and, no surprise, it’s out of the northeast. It’s no biggy of a storm, per se, but it’s a couple fishing days thrown into the crapper. By midweek, things will quiet quickly via light south winds, then another blow, a break, then east and north blow. By the end of the… Continue

Drunken Bacteria and a Beach-eating Nor-easter

BEER BACTERIA TO THE RESCUE: I have to offer this tidbit from the seafood industry. It’s about a new company called Oberon, created by wiz kid marine biologist Andrew Logan, 38, out of Idaho Springs Colorado.

But what could Colorado have to do with seafood, considering to them the closest ocean is “Way over thataway”?

Well, first of all, Logan got his doctorate studying salmon in Norway. I’m not sure what the average… Continue

Friday Nov.; 13, 09 -- Back on the scene

Friday, November 13, 2009: Waves: Huge. Beach erosion: Horrific.

Special duties called me off the Island for a couple days. I had no email access/permission. I was monitoring the storm via various folks close to the action. I got word about Beach Haven’s ravaged beachfront. I know what Holgate will look like at the bird’s nest area. Here’s an example of many emails:

Hey Jay,

I'm wondering if you could post an update on the site (or just respond to me). How are… Continue
