Sunday, Nov. 30, 08 -- Lousy -- good time to freeze up striper fillets.

GREATLY APPRECIATED: It’s that annual humbling time when I seek donations to keep this site running through the coming year. I have no sponsors -- outside those who read and support the site. This is my only fund-drive. Any and all donations go toward the website. And financial support is needed.

Saturday Nov. 29, 08: Bass and boats in equally insane numbers

Saturday, November 29, 2008: Waves: Generally small stuff.

Well, the schoolie bass are packed in like sardines. A weird use of that metaphor, for sure.

The chatter from the boats, along with a couple e-reports and also a phone report from my buddy Walt. P confirm there are bass out there in numbers likely unseen since Native Americans wondered what the hell those sickly-looking white faces on the funny boats could possibly want.

Thanksgiving Day Whale

Jay,
While fishing for stripers off Holgate on Thursday morning, we chased after a flock of gannets 1/4 mile from the beach. Imagine our surprise to see a 35 foot + whale, dark purple in color, in the middle of the bird play. Do you or your readers have any idea what kind of whale this may have been?

Thursday Nov. 27, 08 -- Happy Thanksgiving -- now go fishing

Thursday, November 27, 2008: Waves: 1-2 feet.

-Happy Thanks-for-everything Day. I got my striper but now need another since I have a second T-day event on Saturday.

The beaches will be heavily tested today so maybe someone will find the pockets of stripers out there. Many slow (to skunk) reports are working their way to my desk. However, the sharpies are still finding small bass by working one jetty then another. The use of metals is to the exclusion of other plugs, not the best… Continue

TUES. NOV. 25, 08 -- Lots to write and read

Tuesday, November 25, 2008: Waves: Small. Water clarity: Good.

First, I got this interesting feedback regarding that spooky buggy overturn to our south.

“Jay mann,

I read your story on this, and although i wasn't present i personally know both men, they are both lucky to be alive with the conditions that were present at the time, ( Dense fog, night time and cold water) as far as the guy that drifted 200 yd's out he doesn't even know how far out he went,( he did say it… Continue

Sunday, Nov. 23, 08 -- Chill ain't bad but surfside bassing is

Sunday, November 23, 2008: Waves: 1-2 feet; low current. Water clarity: Good to very good.

Sure, it was cold but it wasn’t all that bad once you got used to the briskness. Of course, those anglers who got cozy inside their buggy – or used same to stand beside as a wind block – had no trouble hangin’ out for the final day of the Classic. Now comes the search for schoolie stripers, famed for showing up at the close of each day.

The bass were pretty much a no-show for the… Continue

Buggy down -- but how far out?!!!!!!

Buggy down -- but how far out?!!!!!!

I didn’t publish this story at first hoping to get more details – but have been too busy to make calls to the authorities down that way. Please read my commentary after the story.

OCEAN CITY - Two surf fishermen were rescued from the water near Corson's Inlet State park at the southern end of the resort after their vehicle went off a ledge caused by erosion and plunged into the ocean.

When police arrived following… Continue

Fri. Nov. 21, 08: Cold but blues keep it warm

Friday, November 21, 2008:

Well, we knew if we waited around long enough the thermometer would make its nearly-winter move – but it seems to have gone too far, as in 20 degrees below normal. Add a coating of white for Barnegat and Waretown area. I also hit some snow squalls driving back from my Thursday evening auction up in Tabernacle. While the U.S. Weather Service is parlaying an El Nino/La Nina impact into a mild and very wet winter for us, this initial insertion of Canadian air… Continue

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 08: Chill but hot bassing arriving

Tuesday, November 18, 2008: Waves: 3-5 feet (wind waves).

The wind didn’t put up the fuss we thought it might but the air temps aren’t going to be denied a plunge into quick-freeze land. At sunset it’s already nearing 32. While we likely won’t be seeing that wintry sight of ice coating the cyclone fences next to bayside bulkheads. For certain, there will be a lot more buggy sitting and hot coffee sipping by surfcasters. That wind-chill aversion will last not only the next few days… Continue

Tuesday Nov. 18, 08 -- Big-ass bass caught; blues left and right (mainly south)

Tuesday, November 18, 2008: Waves: Building slightly out of the north; winds won’t be onshore enough for a huge build-up of waves. Water clarity: Should prevail, staying good despite winds.

I got as mess of reports about fierce blues – above and beyond Classic weigh-ins. I can’t count the number of fishing folks who have remarked, “The blues seem stronger than usual.” That’s a combination of well-fed fish, intrinsic toughness of blues in the 10- to 14-pound range, the rough water… Continue

Monday Nov. 17, 08 -- Blues back at it -- another blow coming

Monday, November 17, 2008:Waves: Subdued, for today. Water clarity: Fair.

Lots of bluefishing action out there, once again. Twenty-some slammers came to the Classic scales yesterday. The same recent hot zone (Brant Beach to Holgate) prevailed. Bassing was slow and slower. Every weigh-in went for bunker. However, a couple folks I know have had big blues (non-tourney) using large Avas and diamond jigs. Plugs have not left much of a mark in the stirred surf.

I haven’t talked… Continue

Fri. Nov. 7, 08 -- A let-up in the weather and a potential burts of bass

Friday, November 07, 2008: Waves: rapidly dropping form 4-5 feet. Water clarity: fair to good.

The weather is about to cut us a big break. This weekend should see highly fishable conditions that will highlight a good to very good showing of post-storm blues and (more so) bass. Look for the first influx of schoolie stripers along the beach -- enough to make it a tad tougher to get a trophy striper. The up side is the way the first schools of schoolies are larger fish, making it very… Continue
