TSUNAMIS SELDOM SLEEP;
FEED ALL THE WILDLIFE
Small things first.
This column is a tad a-kilter due to my inability to get on-line at deadline time, midday Tuesday. Comcast’s fiber optic cable to LBI was gnawed clean through by either Godzilla or Big Foot, depending on which of those two technical explanations you got from…Continue

Monday, June 18, 2012: Very nice conditions out there – as I hear the moans of people stuck at work or way off on the mainland…Continue

Maybe syringes aren't the worst thing to have in the water after all.

ALERT: Beaches being closed due to washed up drug paraphernalia.
Right now, it seems to be syringes and such from combined sewer overflow, in the wake of heavy rains, followed by protracted northeast winds.…Continue

The No Limits fishing duo of Bob Percopo and Jeff Barnhart headed offshore to the Spencer Canyon on Sunday looking for the two degree temperature break in the satellite shots. When the water temperature went from 68 degrees to 70 degrees the lines went in the water although there was really no sign…Continue

CAN YOU IMAGINE IF DOLPHIN WERE MAN-EATERS!?
Friday June 15, 2012:
Winds are still really honking. So much for an early reprieve from these fair-weather northeasterlies. That still doesn't mean things are a blowout for this weekend. Looks like brisk but not killer by midday tomorrow. These winds have scattered the many baitball we had…Continue

June 14, 2012: I'm getting reports of some real decent bassing in the surf. I can't say I've seen much of it firsthand. I've been tracking this grass washup thing but haven't seen many anglers out and about. Still, along with Dante's big bass (44/2, bunker head, Holgate) , I've seen some Facebook reports showing nice stripers coming…Continue

Yet another 40-pounder in the Leaderboard mix as Dante Soriente, as expected, enters the rush to the top. As seas calm – and much of the grass gets pushed onto the beach – surfcasting conditions will rapidly improve. Heads and half bunker baits will add the extra smell and look for the churned surfline.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012: If you’re off-Island this week you’re sure as hell not missing much, fishing-wise. There is something of a spectacle to behold: More deceased and washed-ashore meadow grass than you’ll ever see in your life, especially on Surf City’s beaches. I’m going on half a century…

New ‘Joisey’ Turns Sexy;
Drones Are Watching Us
Oddly enough, I have some less-than-fishy things to write about, though fluking has taken off in a big way. See “Rundown” way below.

Jay, I got a story and a question for you..Last sunday the 9th. fishing on the beach near the rock jetty near the sandy motel at the end of the island, i put the bunker chunk bait on the hook and left to go back to the motel.. came back and the rod was in the water. i reeled it in and had all kinds of shells on my line. had to cut the line. put a glove on right hand and started bringing in line wrapping it around my rt hand. then i noticed big movement in water way out. a huge striper. He…Continue

Monday, June 11, 2012:
Wow, what a difference a day makes. In fact, what a difference a few hours make. The winds have accelerated like those nitro-burning funny cars. Ok, so maybe it didn’t arrive quite that fast, but we have gone from near flat ocean conditions at sunrise to a solid 4 feet and building wind…Continue

Sunday, June 10, 2012: The fluke have sprung. I’ve gotten reports of kick-ass catching near the inlets, including from the banks of The Dike (near Barnegat Inlet). The big thing is the size. Keepers include numerous flatties in the 20-inch and up range. I even had a report of “some of the best fluking I’ve ever seen” from a boat angler, north end.

Saturday, June 09, 2012: What a great day. The winds were mellow and the layer of clouds often kept things from getting too toasty. There were a goodly load of bass, blues and fluke caught nearshore. Sharks were heavily in the mix, further out. I have some mako fillets coming my way. First trigger fish have shows, a personal dining favorite of…Continue

Weekend bassing showed itself early with a 1 a.m.-ish 44/4 by perennial contender Greg O’ Connell. Charles Hess also entered a real nice 28/4 coaxed out in Spray Beach. Elements are all coming together for some decent surf fishing conditions.

The following picture shows the size and species of shark that led to the "Jaws" attacks in 1916. A fish that big can turn rogue very quickly as its nutritional demands go ballistic.

Thursday, June 07, 2012: Brutal T-storm caught many anglers by surprise. It hit around noon and was over by 1:30 but offered some serious bolt action and left a couple inches of rain behind. Per the Weather Service, those buggers could pop up again, despite very light, fishing-friendly winds. Keep a weary eye open if you’re among the many folks trying…Continue
