May 13, 09 -- Weekly Workout

WEATHER FROM VARIOUS ANGLES: The weather this past weekend was way warmer, way nicer, than initially forecasted. Instead of taking the incredible weather and running with it, I ran into those folks who went after the fact the Weather Service was so wrong. That gave me pause, as I pondered the possibility of someday perfecting weather forecasting. Imagine: On January 1 of each year, we get the exact unwavering weather coming up every day of the arriving year.

I’ll warn you right now that… Continue

MISDDAY ALERT: Big bass fishing has “exploded” off Island Beach State Park, 40- feet of water zone, according to Basil at BL B&T. Midday boats off the Towers were trolling up real big blues when the biggest-ass bass to of the spring – up to (are you ready for this?) 60 pounds -- began attacking the likes of big spoons and Mann stretches, said Basil. “They had so much action they couldn’t even keep up,” he said of a report he had just gotten. Basil went a sep… Continue

Sunday, May 10, 2009: It seemed like bassing was brisk yesterday. I had half a dozen reports of fish being caught. Not at a blinding pace by any stretch but consistent enough to alert the media over. There were at least three entries into Simply Bassin’. I’ll try to organize that input today.

Conditions are once gain good for bassing, once Mother’s Day things are taken care of. Mom rules to day so you really should take her along angling. I guess you should also do some other stuff,… Continue

May 9, 2009: First "Simply" bass -- last minute second entry below

The first official entry in Simply Bassin' 2009 reached the scales of Jingles B&T yesterday. A 14-0, 34 1/4 inch bass was weighed in by Kevin Maher of BH Crest. It was taken on clams in the Beach Haven surf. It's in first place and conceptually could be worth $1,000. Of course, this weekend is primed for bass so get out there and cash in on the nice weather -- and the tourney.

Just in: Fame is fleeting:

Joe H. report -- rec'd Friday May 8, 09

Hey guys...fished the BH and BB surf Thursday night. Had a just short bass on clams. Relatively slow, I believe due to the high tide. Went North and went to the plugs. Quickly caught 5 stripers to 30 inches and had a long release on a MEGA weakfish (15lb range) after my JUNK Shimano reel just locked up for no apparent reason. You Shimano guys kill me! Give me a Penn any day.

Black swimming plugs were best but I had a pair on a black storm shad. Released all the fish after photos.… Continue

The world-class crappy weather continues, though I saw something resembling the sun, late-day, right after a pull-to-the-shoulder frog-chocker made driving momentarily impossible over on the mainland. Tomorrow looks decent for angling, with some signs of sun likely and light-ish winds. The ocean is churned but that isn’t the worst thing with so many bass around.

The surf holds stripers but seems to be backing down a bit over some briskness earlier in the… Continue

Equal Opportunity Hooking of Surf Stripers

This is one of those columns that just oozes fish and fishing. That’s to be expected, as Angling 2009 putts and spurts its way into first gear. However, there is definitely water in the engine.

Maybe I’m just getting sky-sensitive in my old age but this sure seems to be one suckacious spring. Not many breaks in the crappiness. Yes, we all cling to the memory of those few 90-degree days a while back. Of course, many folks barely had time… Continue

There is some hot hooking going on toward the south end of the Island. Surfcasters have homes in on a hot spot, one producing bass at a rate too fast for two rods. Fish are schoolies and keepers.

Blues are making frequent passes through bass zones, mainly oceanside. Blues are all-heads to maybe 5 pounds with some larger models mixed in.

Bayside (dockside) action has gotten very iffy, due mainly to weather and high tides. Same with the… Continue

Finally, we all are on the same page. Lets hope the government hears us on the dogfish issue.

From the new wires:

May 4, 2009 - TRENTON, N.J., An unprecedented alliance of commercial, recreational and party/charter boat fishermen and associated businesses has formed Fishermen Organized for Rational Dogfish Management (FORDM) to deal with a looming crisis.

FORDM has requested assistance from Dr. Jane Lubchenco, newly appointed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration head, in dealing with an out-of-balance population of highly predatory spiny dogfish that is depleting other Northeast and… Continue

Weekend of 5/1/09

Had a great weekend of fishing. Fished from 2-5 AM on the bayside of southern LBI and landed 3 bass the biggest being 28". Released all of them. Then fished the outgoing on Saturday on the beach in Beach Haven. Caught 3 shorts in 3 hours. Went back to the bay from 3-5AM on Sunday and caught 3 more bass, the biggest was 29" and made a great dinner! Also got my first doggie and skate of the season. Woohoo. No luck with artificials. Hope the bass keep getting bigger. Felt great to be catching… Continue
