It’s gorgeous out there but the angler response is kinda slow.

Asking around at church today – loads of anglers – hardly anyone has even given it a try. The up side is the way any fishing folks finally have work. With the economy on the crapper, I fully see that foregoing fishing for the sake of income is a no-brainer. In many cases, weekend anglers have that invaluable “extra income” that comes from side jobs come Saturday and…

Friday April 27, 2012 --

Friday, April 27, 2012: A real chill tonight -- and mainland frost. Just as cool tomorrow night. Weird.

Winds should back off a bit tomorrow.

Tog fishing is about to end (Monday). The winds have played havoc with the boat anglers going after better blackies, however, I got a coupe, reports about keepable tog being taken off the South Jetty (BL) so I made a stop-by. Wished I hadn’t. Some folks are at it again, including some quickly walking doubtful fish back…

Weekly blog'about April 25, 2012

I’m groggy as I write this column (Tuesday a.m.). I had a seriously punctuated sleep session last night. Wild west winds were partying like a buncha drunken spring breakers; kicking stuff around my backyard, playing Frisbee with trashcan lids, shoving around  my loose screens. I was half tempted to call the Weather Service on them but realized they hadn’t partied much all winter. So I let them have their fun. So be prepared for a bleary read.

Speaking of being…

Sunday, April 22, 2012:

It’s hard to say what the sparked the big turn-off of those big bass rolling on baitballs last week. Somewhat oddly, it seems the sand eel/bunker/herring-stalking stripers dispersed. That’s based on the way the last of the bass from that action were being taken haphazardly, all around – often…

Saturday April 21 --

Saturday, April 21, 2012:

Today was beauty before the beast, as in beastly weather. While the surf and sea were both decently fishable, angling pressure was kinda light. Chatter from boat bassers (north of inlet) told of very scattered action and no one seemingly banging – though I did hear a snippet “It’s pushing about 20 pounds. My biggest this season …” I think I also heard something about “trolling.”

The beach was a very slow go for the few folks I talked…

Needs adopting -- incredible dog at SOC Animal Shelter

This is one solid tank-like dog who LOVES (!) people. He's on death row.
Sherman - male brindle and white pit - needs to be adopted by Friday!
Been at the shelter since December.
Great dog, very friendly with people, probably around 6 years. A real…

It’s an Imperfect Record-breaker;

Rating the Stings and Bites of LBI

PICTURE UNPERFECT TUNA: Imagine angling a 90-pound striper and having it end up as a mere afterthought in the annals of fishing history. Such is the likely ignominious fate of an astounding 427.9-pound yellowfin tuna caught off Puerto Vallarta last…

Friday, April 13, 2012:

Even though you have to worry a bit for just-planted garden plants tonight (as lows can get down there, possibly into the 30s) we’re in for some freaky hot weather by Sunday and Monday. Almost certain record-shattering temp Monday on the Mainland.

By now, daily temp swings aren’t going to overly impact the arrival of fish. While bass are obviously hanging just off the beaches, there are still (hopefully) tiderunner weakies…

A Sparrow’s Trails and Tribulations;

No Godzillas on the Immediate Horizon

INSIDER NATURE MOMENT: I was backyarding with my binocs, hoping to grab sight some bird rarity migrating northward. Nothin’. So, I settled on watching an up-close sparrow that was feverishly, almost crazily, seeking a perfect blade of dry grass for its nest.

It was amazing. The male bird would bounce around, picking up blades of grass in its beak. He would then go all…

Tues. April 10, 2012

Tuesday, April 10, 2012: What’s with this wind, eh? Can’t say I hadn’t noted that mild La Nina winters are oft followed by wildly windy days (weeks and months?).

WAY WARM: As if we needed confirmation, NOAA just reported “Unprecedented March warmth.”

It was a sizzling 8.6 degrees above normal, nationwide -- excluding Alaska, which was still freezing its collective ass off. Only January of 2006 had a higher monthly upward aberration from the norm. Every state in the…

Monday April 9, 2012 --

Monday, April 09, 2012: The wind is the word. I had a 42 mph gust and a slew of slightly less trashcan-rattling blows. It would be wild on the open sea today. That’s bodes frustratingly for the many folks who tapped into the bountiful bass bite just to our north. I had as many reports in one day as I had all winter. Along with full-blown amazement over the birdplay, I had one tale of a hookup that was absolutely unturnable on fairly heavy gear. Shark? BFT? Marine mammal? Whatever, it has…

Easter Day -- Happy

(LBI alert: Green Gables and surrounding buildings in Beach Haven totally engulfed in flames today. )

Sunday, April 08, 2012: It’s back to the boats ruling the bass bite. Gannet chasers off IBSP northward are banging bass in nonstop numbers. I had a video sent to me of the crowded action. I have never seen gannet diving like that, even in fall – when they’re usually around. This spring showing could be due to the winter-long presence of forage fish, the increase in bunker due…

News update Thursday April, 5

Penton Insight] by Hank Schultz - April 5, 2012

A recent report from a fisheries group has been making waves in the omega-3s sector. The report issues a blanket call for the worldwide harvest of forage fish to be reduced by half. These little fish supply the vast majority of the omega-3 ingredients on the market.
The report, called “Little Fish Big Impact,” was issued by the Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force. The group is chaired by Professor Ellen…

A Crane Game for Lobster;

If you’re boomer material, you surely recall those diabolical arcade “skill crane claw” machines, where you put hard-earned coins into that tall brightly lit machine, certain that you can manipulate a string-rigged grabber to descend down upon a sea of near-worthless goodies, grabbing who know how many, to then transfer to a small chute – and soon into your skilled…

April 3 -- Baitballs

Tuesday, April 03, 2012: Gorgeous day. And I’m getting quite a few more interesting fishing tales leaking in.

How about those monster baitfish schools of herring, bunker and (Ready for this?) Boston macks, not that far off LBI.

There were bass on below the bait, along with high-diving ocean birds, including gannets, a super rare sight in spring. I have no word on exact locales. Make that, I can offer no exact locales. By the by, the baitballs…

Monday April 2, 2012

There was a real decent bite on the west side of Beach Haven, i.e. bayside. It was a bass-on-herring scene. Night anglers were actively tapping into inbound stripers, chasing herring. I’m not sure what type herring.

This burst of bass bodes well for night fishing. Those bass are surely bound for Manahawkin bay. Hearing how active the Beach Haven bass were biting, I’m not even winging it to guarantee some brisk Causeway bridge fishing -- for…
