jaymann Sat. Nov. 6, 09 -- Not the same

Saturday, November 07, 2009: Waves: Small south swell. It sure wasn’t yesterday out there. The ocean looked similar on the surface but the bunker were not showing just below. In fact, they were no-shows in many areas. With the weekend angler masses out there, a fair number of bass came to the scales but they were that entry-level zone, with a couple nicer ones mixed in. See lbift.com. Bluefish remain sketchy – and seriously smaller than usual for this time of year. The winds have not built the… Continue

jaymann Thur. Nov. 5, 09 -- Winds and slowness

It’s that humbling time of the year where I ask for donations to keep this blog up and running. It is a time consuming enterprise but I enjoy it. It’s kinda therapeutic. Donations can be mailed to: Jay Mann, 222 18th Street, Ship Bottom, NJ, 08008-4418. Being Type A I don’t always have the time to mail Thank-you note b… Continue

jaymann Sunday Nov. 1, 09 -- Even more 30s; Classic leaderboard

Sunday, November 01, 2009: Though the water didn’t look all that great today, it still offered some very good angling. More cows. So many that I’m duly impressed. Something like four more bass over 30 pounds have made it to the Classic. That makes a total of 15 30-lbers with that one 40-plus bass. All that amounts to not only some serious stripering but as dynamic a “derby” as we’ve ever seen. There are also smaller stripers coming off many beach areas. Plus, big bass for folks not in the event… Continue

jaymann Sat. Oct. 31, 09 -- Winds and hooking pick up -- change clock back tonight

Saturday, October 31, 2009: Winds: Hard south. What a difference a day – and a wind shift – makes. While things didn’t explode out there today, the blues and bass positively responded to the hard southeasterlies. The blues were cookie cutters, right at the 10-pound mark. Dozens were caught at various locales, though they weren’t overwhelming any single site – as they can sometimes do. It was a couple looker bass that opened some Classic eyes. Try a Darcy Kolodziej’s 30-6 topped by Tom Law Sr.’… Continue

jaymann Friday Oct. 30, 09 -- Bassing slow;

Friday, October 30, 2009: The fishing has definitely slowed. I’m not sure of the cause. Maybe just one of those things – or not. There also seems to be very little in the way of bait on the move. Of course, all this wind and wetness makes it tough to get a read on things. I had three reports directly today. All were pretty much skunkers. I see a few Classic weigh-ins, bass in the upper teens. That showing is obviously down considerably. We’ll see hard south winds tomorrow, usually a bass turn-o… Continue

jaymann Tuesday Oct 27, 09 -- Wet and wild issues

Tuesday, October 27, 2009: Waves: 5-foot north swell. Water clarity: Good. Well, that was a ton wetter than the forecast – which had no rain scheduled. Though it began windily out there, things mellows through the day and some fair bassing and slammering was had, though fishing pressure was down. As noted in recent blogs, many anglers carefully sort through the days when deciding on calling in with angling-related illness, though that gnarly band of all-weather types live for sloshy days like th… Continue

jaymann Monday Oct. 26, 2009 -- Weather re-rears -- Classic standings

Monday, October 26, 2009: Waves: Rapidly building 5- to 6-foot north wind swell. Water clarity: fair. Yesterday’s kick-ass weather didn’t really kick ass fishing-wise. There were a goodly number of weigh-in for the Classic and non-contestants I talked to talked about a guy or two catching a fish near them but it cooled a bit mainly due to very stained water. There was also more of a groundswell than expected so it was a leaden experience getting bait to stay put on the bottom. I saw a nice beach… Continue

jaymann Wed. Oct. 21, 09 -- Great looking day; Things improving

Wednesday, October 21, 2009: Waves: Small. Water clarity: Ideal. Water temps: Upper 50s to 60. I fished a lot today, plugged mainly. Squat and a half but I wasn’t overly concerned. It was just plain ideal out there. Mild but fallish, sun and blue skies, light winds, clean water. And quite a few folks cashed in on the great conditions. A bass of 35 pound taken by Joe Carmelengo somewhere in Brant Beach. I don’t always give towns but Brant Beach is very large – and has some of the best water on L… Continue
