Daily Fishing and Outdoor Report

Updated daily, jaymanntoday provides the latest in fishing and outdoor exploration in Southern Ocean County, New Jersey, specializing in late-breaking fishing and nature reports.

NOTE: This is my new webserver. There are some added elements over the pervious site(s) but the reports will stay the exact same. The prime gain in here is the stacking of reports so you be able to read previous reports going back quite a ways. I will also be increasing photo presence and adding video clips to show what's going on here on LBI and vicinity. Per usual your emails and reports are what keeps things up and running. Please let me know if there are any problems you're having with this blog site. jmann99@hotmail.com.

July 4th, 09 -- packed but no angling fireworks

Saturday, July 04, 2009: waves: Small east swell. Winds: hard west.

Well, if you're one of the 19 people who aren’t on Long Beach Island this weekend, be thankful. It’s as shoulder-to-shoulder out there as I can recall – back years, even decades. All of Friday and Saturday, the Causeway was stop-and-go. The number of anglers was equally congested.

I listened to radio chatter and got quite a few fluke reads, mainly goodly numbers of hookups and very poor keeper rates. As noted the past couple r… Continue

July 2, 09 --

Thursday, July 02, 2009: Waves: Choppy 2-foot south swell. Water clarity: Good.

As we gear for the biggest shore weekend of the year, I can’t say the fish are over-ready. There are beach and boat bass occasionally at a decent clip (north end) but the action is very sketchy, even more so than normal. Who knows, you might be the sketcher-catcher. Think early and change bait often. Bunker or clams. Plugs are getting the occasional suicidal striper. There is often one hookup per jetty. Any other ba… Continue

July 1, 09 -- Weekly blog-about

NEW RAY IN TOWN: Oddity of the season (to this point): a new ray is in the house, as in stingray.
(Hey ever wonder what happened to Raymond J. Johnson, Jr., i.e. “Now you can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay, or you can call me Johnny, or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me ...”? He’s doing fine. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoYsfbq3vMc.)
I first got a look at one of these extra-large rays via a digital picture emailed me by Nick H., who landed one while surfcasting last wee… Continue

June 29, 09 -- Calm surf; loads of fluke

June 29, 2009: waves: Small to flat. Winds: Hard offshore (westerlies). Water temps: Mild, 70-ish.

Fluke catching was hot today. I had reports of near nonstop hooking from many sectors. Expectedly, complaints centered on the famed ratio. It is high but still not nearly as untenable as last year. I even had a boat angler out of Barnegat who said he had his allowable bag limit at a three (throwback) to one (keeper) ratio. I marked the drift and worked it until we all maxed out,” he said. He is on… Continue

June 28, 09 -- Winds a hassle -- waste a bigger problem.

Sunday, June 28, 2009: Waves: Choppy east swell, 2 to 2.5 feet. Winds got very frisky mid-morning and whipped most of the day.

Simply Bassin’ 2009 tourney ends today after a long and active 8-week stint. Final tabulation will be made and final leaderboard will be published tomorrow.… Continue

You got that right -- and you can add black flies and, if you do woods time on the mainland, one of the worst years for chiggers that I've ever seen.

You forgot to mention that the LARGE GREENHEAD FLIES HAVE ARRIVED TO ENJOY THEIR TASTE OF THE FISHERMEN/WOMEN!!! SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE!!!
Jay, thanks for the ID on the spiny butterfly ray. Wish more fish could fight like that... a real treat. Still wish it was that big bass, but it was fun for the unique opportunity to see a species I've never seen before.

Jay, got to Surf City at around 2 pm and the guards were just pulling people off the beach. A uniformed police officer came by the lifeguard stand between 4th and 5th. He had a biowaste box. The female guard that has been there for at least 5 year...

Jay, Never caught one in 20plus years of fishing the beach in BL but this past Thursday towards sunset I hooked up a gar. Was using a 4oz cripple herring on my surf pole casting over the breakers about 100 yds out reeling in medium speed when it h...
